Re: December 2012 tasting notes incl Xmas/NY

Family Christmas party Wines Jim Barry Watervale Riesling 2012 - I'm pretty new to riesling but this is the best I've had. Fruity (citrus) but dry, crisp finish and a bit of minerality. I've bought 6 for the next few weeks Grosset Polish Hill Riesling 2012 - I think this is the definition of 'tight ...

2004 Bodega Catena Zapata 'Nicolas Catena' Beautiful wine to my taste - lovely aroma with fruit balanced well with secondary/savoury flavours. Plenty of ripe red fruit on the palate with well balanced fine tannins and french oak/vanilla. Good length. Overall velvety and balanced mouthfeel. Already o...

Re: 2012 - life changing wine experience

Thanks Andrew, He had a couple of impressive Burgundies for the occasion, but the Sommelier suggested that with the lineup and number of wines, they'd be too much. (there were eight of us drinking so by the end of the day i was pretty drunk) I'm hoping for an invite for the next one to try the burgu...

2012 - life changing wine experience

Hi all, This is my first visit back to the site in some years - I lurked frequently and posted occasionally 2006/2007 when I was starting to get into wine The 5-6 year since then i continued to follow advice gained here and drank widely, although largely Australian wines. I'd check in here now and t...

I've had quite a few of these in recent months - my brother in law bought several dozen in a cheap deal and used it as the main red at christmas/New Year functions It's still a great drop with classic velvety Barossa shiraz flavours - rich chocolate, plum and spice on the palate, but when tasted alo...

My wife and I were in the area ( on Caves Rd dunsborough side) over the weekend and on Friday night it hailed long and hard - some small dents on the roof of the car.

Despite this had some great tastings at Windance, Flying Fish Cove and Gralyn. Sadly Woodlands had very little available to taste.

Maybe a little flat. Had a slight aroma of amyl nitrate -

I've been out buying jams to teach my palate - not sure about developing my nose for amyl nitrate!

Perhaps I need to get out more

Wisdom tooth infection hampered my tasting this week, Shingleback McLaren Vale Cabernet 2004 Ripe berry fruit dominated on the nose and initial palate, not balanced by much oak and tannin. Day 2 was better with chocolate and midweight tannins balancing the fading fruit. Good length Heartland Caberne...

L Plater, I'm almost certain the first Stonewell was the 1989. Happy to be proven wrong, but I cant recall ever seeing an 88. Mike Not sure I can correct you Mike. This was a friend's wine, but I was sure it was an 88 Stonewell (?Museum Release) - but I'm more likely to be mistaken. I did a quick s...

Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz 1988 The only other two >10y old wines I've had were undrinkable, so I was hesitant. I was pleasantly surprised. Initially very flat and woody, it opened up over an hour to display earthy, mushroom and a little smoky bacon flavour. These were still a bit overshadowed ...

The Longhop dozen didn't last long on my recent trip, but it was a terrific drop. After that ran out I did the rounds and drank a few really enjoyable reds. Wyndam 555 and Waterwheel Shiraz were both terrific. Also revisited the latest Wynn's Shiraz and was disappointed; nothing terribly wrong with...

First tasting notes, here goes - Nepenthe Zinfandel 2004 My first foray into Zin. Berry fruit jam/preserve notes on the nose as I expected, although not candyish. These were also on the palate, with some earthy and spicy flavours to balance it out. Very little in the way of tannin, a medium bodied ...

Drinking time a bit later in Perth, Second night of Kabminye Shiraz Cabernet 2004 (better than day one, but it has been a long working day) - fruit has died down a bit, with some coffee and chocolate flavours coming through, but not quite enough to balance the oak and (fine)tannin. OK wine but defin...

Ready to Post

Hi all, I've been a long time lurker here - since 2003 I think (under the old format). At the time I posted a couple of 'what are the best reds under $25' posts, then decided to shut up and just drink wine for a while. Since then I've become a fan of the mixed dozen, often with suggestions from here...
