Re: Which 5 Wineries are Most Represented in Your Cellar?

1 Marius
2 Wynns
3 Penfolds
4 Seppelts
5 Rieslingfreak

Unfortunately Marius will only continue to go down but I should be able to stretch 133 bottles over a year or two

Re: POLL: How do you buy most of your wine?

My records classify winery mailing list as cellar door so went cellar door (30%). Then house account (the various family and friends programs like cellardoor etc) (20%) Then a bunch of retailers - if different branches of Dirty Dans are combined may be about 25%

If you like St Henri find a 2013 - should be singing in 2033 - bought a few on release which I have managed to keep my hands off to date - a birth year wine for 2 godsons - could easily be a 21st wine but I might just have to drink it myself :-)

Bought 6 Bin 28 and 2 St Henri (only Pennies I've been buying for the last few years) - was tempted by 389 after drinking a 98 and an 02 last week - but outside my usual price bracket

Re: Bucket List Tasting

What a great lineup of wines, especially with three first growths from the heralded 1982 vintage. I love the fact that amid all the famous names a Jamieson's Run made an appearance. Was the 1986 the Jimmy Watson Tropy winner? The last time I tried one, either the '91 or '92, it was far from resolve...

Vines should be fine (presuming not too much washed away)

Flooding has been a feature of Langhorne Creek https://www.victorharbortimes.com.au/story/4 ... nk-photos/

Like many people Penfolds (with Wynns) was the core of my starting a cellar but the pricing has gone from good value for money to "fully" priced It really makes you reconsider. I have bought relatively little in the last 15 years but .... a couple of weeks ago I opened a 1998 St Henri damn...

Re: Mount Pleasant

I don't think anyone can really say that they have recent experience with Mt Pleasant. Was sold as part of the McWilliams bankruptcy - new owners and the cellar door has only just reopened (I think). Probably need a response from someone living in the Hunter for where exactly they are up to. Certain...

Re: TN: some 2005 Oz reds

The 2005 heading caught my attention. 2005 is my daughter's birth year so I went long in 2005.
The only 2 I have from that list are the Vat 1 and the Rockford.
Thanks for the notes

Re: Leo Buring Extra Special Riesling.

I'd reckon later than 73 (74 was the big changeover from a consumer perspective) given that there were an awful lot of bottles in the immediate post-metric era labelled 738ml, as older pre-metric stocks were used up. When was the Lidcombe site vacated? Graeme I think Lidcombe was vacated after the ...

The bottle is metric so post 1973. Len Evans Complete Book of Australian Wine (1984) lists: "Leo Buring Extra Special Riesling Hock It is a good clean wine, showing a little fruitiness, and is quite crisp. Not a wine for laying down, but is very popular for everyday drinking." It is not ob...

Opened my two magnums in July last year (2018). Looked really good - perfect for the better half's 50 lunch party. I had marked them down for drinking as the last couple of standard bottles the year before were fading. Ah the vagaries of cork.

Over the last 20 years I have bought a bit of Riedel Vinum. The one I never got round to was the Burgundy / Pinot glass. When I started drinking Pinot a bit more I bought some Schott Zwiesel which are okay - the budget didn't extend to Riedels at the time. The one glass I really love in the Riedel r...

Re: Advice on Older Aussie Reds

I collected the Jamieson's Run for a while back then - the 1988 won the Jimmy Watson. I cleaned them all out in about 2002, okay but not great wines. As others have said 1991 is the pick of the vintages (for South Australia). 1992 was pretty ordinary in SA, 1988 rarely came into perfect balance for ...

1954 Tulloch Private Dry Red - I would have been 15 given it was opened for Dad's 40th (okay more than 30 years ago). It was amazing complex.

For the cellaring addiction 1986 Wynns Cab Sav - last one drunk last year - looked great especially the mixed storage it had put up with

Different areas in the cellar for reds, whites, red bubbles, stickies and fortifieds

Within each category firstly by vintage, then by maker, then by label or variety.

Makes it reasonably easy to find but the once a year reshuffle can be a back breaker

Re: TN: Berri Estates Cabernet Sauvignon 1992

Given you are in Germany I have to wonder if this was export wine. Berri wasn't particularly good back then but given the vintage is a year or two before the red wine boom it might have had some okay fruit in it but 1992 wasn't a great year. A lucky bottle - I think most of us round here would have ...

Hi I've read a few articles now that suggest drinking red wine staves off common colds and bugs. Anyway, I'm starting to think this is indeed true as we have a 2 year old who from time to time picks up all sorts of nasties from daycare etc. Interestingly, the last 4 times he has been sick my wife h...

At various stages I have had this problem - but I have removed the label and stuck them in a book. Once labels would come off with a soak in water but the modern glues make that pretty hard. Look at good examples of Aussie Riesling (2012 a good start) and Hunter Semillon (Vat 1). Couldn't agree more that the bargains for aging are in the whites. Saturday opened 1998 Richmond Grove Watervale Riesling - great stuff won't get better but will hold for another 10, Last night 2003 Merea Park...
