Seems he's only rated the shiraz' so far: Shiraz - 96 (2033-43) Shiraz Malbec - 93 (2025-33) Shiraz Mataro - 95 (2025-33) So, assuming they don't give the cabernets 97+, Jeremy is a "drongo", then Not really. Oliver consistently rates about 2 to 2.5 points lower than Halliday. He has expr...

Re: TN: 1998 The Rothbury Estate Brokenback Shiraz

Pokolbinguy, If you refer to this: m Baintons still seems to be in business so I don't think the vineyard has changed hands. It talks about where the grapes have been sold since 1982, but they built a winery in 2000 to make wines from their own grapes. I just wondered which Tyrrells/Rothbury wines t...

Re: TN: 1998 The Rothbury Estate Brokenback Shiraz

Pokolbinguy, Thanks for the interesting stories. Another vineyard whose fruit used to be used in Tyrrells and Rothbury Estates wines is the Fordwich vineyard owned by Russell Bainton QC. The shiraz vines are now over 50 years old and the Semillon ones over 80 years of age. Do you know which particul...

Oops! I meant an adjective. Adverb + adjective.

Graham, in your example 'workshop the program' workshop becomes the verb. Language is ever changing!

Sorry for the mistake and the thread drift. Back to the Penfolds.....

That said, I rarely enjoy MV wines, so maybe my bias shines through. Mike Mike, I'm rather surprised you say that as I thought you were a big fan of South Australian reds. I would have thought anybody who liked Barossa wines would like McLaren Vale wines, too. They are as close in style to Barossa ...

Warmer regions, like South Australian (excluding Adelaide Hills), Hunter Valley, etc are probably the best bets as they would struggle to make a 'modern' style high acid chardonnay. Exceptions apply as always.....

Re: Merlot - a complete wine?

The line I've heard repeated a few times recently is that, despite pinot being said to be hard to make well out of its homeland, that description much better suits merlot. But I guess it could also describe others like nebbiolo. Some of my favourite Australian merlots come from Coldstream Hills, Bir...

Don't keep your wine fridges in your wine cellar, though. The heat given off will heat up the room. Not ideal.

Re: Cellar Build in Established House

Cork will move given temperature changes, but with screwcap, I'm not convinced that stability of temperature are so critical. High temperatures are a different matter as they increase chemical reactions. Short periods of high-ish temperatures may not be a big issue. But I think it's mostly a matter ...

Re: A question from a total beginner...

For a new drinker, top of the range wines like DM could be a waste Imo. Obviously depends on the person who's drinking it. Why not start with a Woodlands cab merlot and see how it goes..... OTOH Bordeaux is quite different to Australian wine, so maybe a Cru Bourgeois would be a more similar choice w...

And there you have it. How to fix a blind tasting. Well, maybe. I can't be sure, but surely the wines you put in should be reasonable examples of their kind? And reading JR's article, many of the wines were clearly faulty. And that won't make the headlines will it? But, some apparently weren't fault...

Great resource! The only weakness, for me, is the fact that I don't know how recent the data is. Take this (rather far fetched) example: If a Grange 1985 last sold for $200 in 1990. That's not telling me much about it's current value. If there was an indication as to when the last sale occurred and ...

I have friends in Hong Kong who have put their kids through school there AUD15,000 per child per year. Rent AUD40K per year. With high everyday cost and 15% tax, there's a...
