Agree with most of the those notes, though I enjoyed the Johhno's Sem just a smidgen more.

That 05 St Andrew Riesling is an excellent wine so it doesn't surprise me.
I think Nev can tell you some stories too about German stuff that he left in his fridge that looked bulletproof for ages after opening.
Moral of the story = Riesling rocks.

Beer. It has to be beer. Which beer is largely beholden to the the quality of the restaurant's beer supplies
Little Creatures Pale Ale is fairly well distributed so makes for an easy option but the sky is the limit with craft ales.

Went to Becasse last night for the first of their 'Cellar Night' series dinners, at which you can BYO for $15 a bottle. Can thoroughly recommend it Larmandier Bernier Terre de Vertus NV A Champagne that deserves a decant. Super dry, super long and just so pure and powerful. Awesome wine, absolutely...

Warramate White Label Yarra Valley Shiraz 2008 Definitely lighter this year but I think it will end up being one very long lived wine. Light ruby coloured. Pinot coloured. Nose of cranberry, glacé cherry and smoky overtones. Subdued and feline nose, though crystal clear flavours. Light bodied, a...

Re: TN: Barossa Shiraz - The new icons and wannabes
Good call Rod, In that tasting there were several (not inexpensive) wines that I would happily shell out for, The standard Hobbs Shiraz and The First Drop 'the Cream' in particular were delicious wines. The problem perhaps lies in how divisive this style of wine is, with pricetags that hardly help. ...

Re: TN: Barossa Shiraz - The new icons and wannabes
Thanks for the impressions Andrew. While it makes for interesting reading, I'm not sure I'd draw too many conclusions from the tasting. Agreed. Would have been very interesting to see some more classical Barossa icons (Stonewall, Meshach, Hill of Grace etc) mixed in there. Was fun to look at the li...

TN: Barossa Shiraz - The new icons and wannabes
These were all tasted blind at a retailers tasting a few weeks back. The ten wines on offer were from 5 different producers, with each winery contributing one absolute 'icon' Shiraz, as well as an 'entry level' Shiraz. All wines decanted for 6 hours before tasting. Prices are RRP, with the rankings ...

Ditto for the Barwang (Cabernet) & the Tahbilk reds (Shiraz & Cabernet). The 08 Kirrihill Shiraz should cellar alright too and the Yalumba 'The Scribbler' is another good drinker that should get better. The latest Torzi Matthews Schist Rock is meant to be a goodun too (though I haven't had t...

The 99 looked very youthful. I'd wait 2-3 more years (depending on cellaring conditions of course).
Should make it to the end of this decade methinks.

I've been a bit tardy getting these notes compiled, but they come from the public tasting of the 2009 International Riesling Challenge held in Canberra a few months back. I actually find that straw character in Hunter Sem too, usually in the (circa) 1-5 year old riper styles. Brokenwood with a year or two on it is a prime example.
Can't say I'm a fan of the character, but it does seem to dissapate with bottle age.

I thought it (Wynns 07 BL) wasn't too bad either, especially at the sub $20 release price. The thing to bear in mind with Wynns Black Label Cabs is that they rarely impress greatly on release, but give them 5-8 and its a different story. As Jeremy said, the Riddoch is a glorious wine, with 04,05 &am...
