Re: Forum Future

Hi Gavin, I stopped visiting forums back in 2010 (just checked for accuracy) for a couple of reasons. I got sick of the BS here but mainly that other forum, now defunct, and I thought it inappropriate to keep posting as I was now also representing a couple of wineries and didn't wish to be like othe...

Re: Tour De France Tasting

You left off the Gin and Beer to start with but

Some pretty fair cheeses to be sourced from those regions, as well as local dishes to go with the wine of your choice.

Re: Your favourite QPR aussie riesling

As I have gotten older I have almost completely given up on the steely acidfest that is Oz riesling and almost exclusively purchase old world gear. However I must admit to succumbing and buying half a doz Jim Barry Florita 2009 and a doz Jim Barry Watervale 2009 on our recent foray through the valle...

Probably quite a few more than you think, just that the mataro/mourvedre percentage is less 15% and hence not mentioned on the label.

1998 Bin 28 is still excellent
1998 Bin 128 forget it
1998 Bin 389, superb if you have a win with the cork. They were a real lottery as far as TCA was concerned.

Re: Best Red Sparkler Under $30

As far as I'm aware, the Yalumba D Black is a vintage sparkler, not NV. And if you can find it for under $30 these days I'd like to know about it. The best price I've seen is around $36. It's a favourite of mine - nice combination of cabernet and shiraz. Sort of like a sparkling Signature. I think ...

A bit biased here as I sell it :- Magpie Estate "The Thief", Mataro/Mourvedre dominant in the dry/savoury style.

Just because it is under screwcap doesn't mean it isn't TCA. Muted fruit and wet cardboard sounds like TCA to me. However the Angelina hallucination brings in the possibility of LSD

19 years old, beer and spirits drinker, a girlfriend opened a flagon, yes that's right a flagon, of Sveta Maria Dry Red. I buy birth year + 100 Seppelt Para Ports for the grandkids so I guess they should hang in there another 20 years. The Hardy VPs I bought for my own kids 21sts were bloody lovely, 1977 and 1979.

Re: Old vines in Australia

A little bird once told me that there are more wines labelled as coming from 100yo vines than the number of 100yo vines in Australia could produce. It was further suggested that one day this labelling conundrum may have to be settled by a lawyer and a horticulturist with a chainsaw.

If you are just up for Pub food, the meals at the Greenock are more than just OK. The Tanunda Hotel is usually pretty good and is an easy walk from your apartment.

If you want top nosh and are willing to pay - Appellation at Louise.

Better off having dinner at Vintners and sorting out lunches elsewhere like :-

Salters at Saltram, Greenock Tavern, or picnic hamper at Peter Lehman (or Rockfords if you are a Stonewaller).

Paranook Apartments are excellent, as are Cabernet and Bluestone Cottages in Mills St (even closer to the pub and restaurants).

If you want isolated and comfortable old world charm, Light Pass House in Light Pass Road, Light Pass is the spot. Middle of nowhere but strangely close to everything.

Personally I have had no problem (apart from the time taken) with returns from Penfolds for TCA affected wines.

1998 389 was a real crapshoot as far as TCA was concerned and I ended up exchanging all I had bought for equivelent value in Bin 28 after the first 3 bottles I opened were all foul.
