Re: What is the Most You've Ever Paid for a Bottle of Wine?
$550 for a bottle of '06 Grange from retail maybe 5 or so years ago. It will be the only Grange I ever buy.

Re: Right, what are we/you drinking now .. tonight
Xmas eve celebrations with the family and co. Highlight of the night was mum’s spectacular Vietnamese cooking. Veuve Cliquot NV - This had been sitting in the cellar for years, probably >10 years realistically. Opened it because why not, had developed some of those dry sherry nutty notes and had ple...

Re: Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon
I had a 2006 a few weeks back, crazy I paid $15 for it. In a perfect zone, plenty of butter (what I look for in aged Semillon) but still had enough acid to keep it interesting and not flat and dull. Was telling my friends at the BBQ (who don't drink wine often) it was butter wine, I think I convince...

Re: Tips for a rookie wine collector
Don't buy too much SA shiraz. I don't even like it that much yet it makes up a significant chunk of my cellar. Don't go chasing points (which is how I ended up with so much SA shiraz).

Re: Your Cellar Treasure
Great thread topic. For me... 2006 Grange - Definitely the only Grange I will ever buy. Bought it quite a few years ago for $550 retail telling myself it's too much but it'll be the only one. I didn't want to risk auction, and looking at current prices I'm definitely not thinking of getting another....

Re: Right, what are we/you drinking now .. tonight
2009 Amelia Park Cabernet Merlot - Held on to this too long, fruit gone leaving only acid and a bit of tannin behind. Surprisingly purple. Tried to persist with it but no good, down the sink. :( Seems awfully young for a Cabernet to have aged so much. I was pretty surprised, I thought it would have...

Trying to line up some work travel so I can be in Sydney on the 6th.
If it works out I'll bring a pair of '08's, one Houghton Gladstones and the other Wynns Black Label.

Yeah MB gave it a good write up and consequently it was pretty hard to get. I think it lives up to it, as far as SSBs go it's pretty damn good.swirler wrote:Does hype mean Wine Front gave it a high score? Halliday is totally uncool and who else does anyone pay attention to?

Re: Right, what are we/you drinking now .. tonight
2011 Wooing Tree Pinot Noir I took a 2010 to an offline last year and it was a green stalky mess. Wish I had taken this one. Still had some whole bunch in the background and tannin influence, but still plenty of fruit and a bit of earth to balance it out. A pleasant wine, bottle was finished with n...

Re: Christmas Day Drinking?
Thoroughly enjoying my last bottle of ‘09 Leflaive et Associes Rully 1er, has developed nice butterscotch/caramel notes to compliment the fruit and plentiful acid. Lovely example of aged white Burgundy.
Also drinking a ‘14 Rockcliffe Chardonnay, very nice in its own right but nothing on the Leflaive.

Annual (Try to beat your) 'Wine of the Year' tasting with some Grape Mates at Bentley on Fri night. If Dave vino doesn't beat me to it, will try to get a write up done over Xmas. Krug was 96,98,00, PYCM M-P 11,14, DRC Monty was 2010, Richebourg was 96, Musigny was 95. Gaja SSL were 90 and 04. LaLa'...

Not the best wine, but 2013 Hoddles Creek Estate Pinot, just so good for what I paid for it. The structure of it is what impressed me the most.

"Any love for Merlot?" Not really. I have tried all of the above mentioned wines more than once - had a 2012 Irvine Grand Merlot only a couple of weeks ago. Good mid-palate but they all lack the supporting structure that a good dollop of cabernet would add to the blend. I remain totally u...

I'm a big fan of the Blue Poles Reserve Merlot and Allouran (Merlot/Cab Franc blend) out of WA. Brash Higgins also make a nice Merlot with a touch of Nero d'Avola in it.

Re: Red Wine Anniversary Present Help!!
hi Catchnrelease, I'm looking for the 3-7 year mark wines, was just answering the question of when they met. I do like the idea of the 1 and 5 year anniversary being celebrated so would stick with wines that will age from now until the 7 year mark. Much easier to achieve, most well made red wines w...

Re: Red Wine Anniversary Present Help!!
You can get age worthy current release wines for $50 but you have to know what you're looking for. To clarify, are you looking for a wine from any vintage to be drunk in 3-7 years from now, or a wine from 2005 to be drunk in 2025? If you're looking to buy a wine from the 2005 vintage you will need t...

Re: Red Wine Anniversary Present Help!!
I think budget is an important factor. I would go a pair of Sami-Odi's personally - their non-vintage 'Little Wine' (currently it's the #6) for the first anniversary and their vintage release (its name changes each vintage, but current release is the "Mahe & Ribo") as the longer term w...

I've been binging Gordon Ramsay videos on YouTube lately, so I'd go to his restaurant and hope they give me something raw, just so I can say "it's f*cking rawww".
Note, I haven't been to England since I was a kid and this comment has no value.

Re: German Riesling Advice
Auslese is very ripe/sweet, so it's a bit like comparing apples with oranges (disregarding the fact that we are already comparing different varieties!) So you need to choose between sweet and dry. It’s not a choice in styles, I know the two are completely different. It’s more so in comparative qual...

German Riesling Advice
Looking to get a small number of German rizzas to cellar medium-long term. Any advice? Prefer something in the off-dry, slightly sweet spectrum, so probably Spatlese or so.
Currently looking at some of the 2015 Jo Jos Prums. Nothing over $100 p.b. domestically, preferably closer to the $50-70 mark.

Re: Best NZ/AUS Chardonnay & Pinot Noir Offline - Fri 13 Oct
Great night, the Ten Minutes by Tractor was great, should be noted it was the 10X as well, not the estate. Such a nicely composed wine for <$30. I loved both the By Farr's, especially the chard which had a sake like characteristic that I loved.
