Re: COVID Lockdown - Good Wine/Food Stories

My sister moved from Syd to Canberra a few months ago, so all her wine from my dad’s cellar (about 3 cases of quaffers plus a few “special” bottles kept on a shelf in a vintec) went down to Canberra too. She sent a pic this week of a wine opened mid-week to go with a random dinner, they picked this ...

Re: Wine books

I’m a bit late to the party, but ordered Stalin’s Wine Cellar last week - it arrived on Sat morning & I finished it that night (with some help from a Teusner Shiraz). It’s a great read, and there’s enough photos in the book & online to show that most of it actually happened... but I’d love t...

Great idea, and it “triggers” when the capsule is broken (opened), so it can’t be reused

A bottle of 2005 Bin389 early this week for my birthday... a glass for the missus and the rest for me (over 2 nights)

unfortunately couldn’t share it with my folks or sister... but that’s payback for the pic they sent me of the cake they baked & then ate!

All good, I found a nice wooden crate for $10 - it held the full 12 bottles plus a boxed decanter

Bloody heavy once full though!

What restaurant is that? Good? Tetsuya's $30 corkage for 1st bottle, $45 pb after that. Overall was a really good experience, Seafood based dishes were excellent, Duck dish was good, Wagyu dish was OK. They gave us a tour of the kitchen and cellars, had a chat with the head chef and one of the somm...

Re: Right, what are we/you drinking now .. tonight

I openend a 2009 Zepplin Big Bertha Shiraz last night - it tasted a bit odd & had a very slight fizz to it. I gave it a few hours, and it wasn’t any better so went down the sink..

Anyone had experience with fizz in a screwcap red?

Opened a Mike Press 2011 Cab Sav instead, nice bargain quaffer..

Re: Fast decanting

An expensive way to achieve simple results... maybe worth it if you’re cracking Barolo every night, but for the rest of us...

For good bottles, I decant via a vinturi to a decanter, then vinturi back into the bottle for serving.

Re: Alert: Cheap Aussie Shiraz Wins Gold!

Is this a well known show?

There were 45 wines given Gold, and the Aldi wine didn’t win a trophy.

I’m happy to spend $7 to try it just in case, but I’d say it’s not the amazing super bargain that the results suggest...

Plus 2 mixed cases of red for presents!

Re: BYO restaurants in Sydney

Quick update: the meal was excellent, but the Brunello was amazing!

Double decanted late afternoon, had half a glass after an hour and it was still pretty tight, then back in the bottle for the trip to dinner & decanted again. Opened up nicely, maybe some alcohol evap helped too

Re: BYO restaurants in Sydney

I can’t see why a restaurant would just set a high corkage charge (30-50) for BYO - they still make a decent profit without the storage costs.

It's at Freshwater, which makes it a very short list of 1...

I've found a lot of places will do BYO if you ask nicely, and they'll charge $$$ corkage too...

Re: POLL: Penfolds 2017 release - Are you in?

I'll still buy the good releases at the right price - $25ish for Bin28/128, $50 for 389, etc

Not too likely to see these sorts of prices again though I'd expect.

Kicking myself for not buying more $60 RWT when I had the chance too!

Re: BYO restaurants in Sydney

I've got an anniversary dinner this sat - Italian degustation, good wine list but has agreed on a BYO bottle with steep corkage- just need to decide what to take.

Here's my shortlist - any tips on these:
2009 RWT
2002 Elderton Command
2004 Podere La Vigna Brunello Riserva
