There's some amazing discounts on this - almost as cheap here as some of the major markets. Plus, I had a bottle of the 1990 on the weekend which was really, really good !conformistpete wrote:Makes me think I don't have enough, then I remember how much champagne you buy.Mike Hawkins wrote:6 more 2008 Pol Roger Brut

I bought this for less than the average price listed on wine-searcher. Many other Champagne houses can be purchased here locally for only around 10% more than the wine-searcher price. Considering the wine taxes we pay here, that's really quite surprising. I'm so used to getting ripped off and then some on imported wines.

Re: April 2018 purchases
Good to hear that Mike. How developed was it if I may ask. The last bottle I had was probably a decade ago and it was tight as a drum, exhibiting no aged character at all. It was then that I resolved to deep six my remaining two bottles. In fact I had thought to open my 96s before the 1990s.Mike Hawkins wrote:I had a bottle of the 1990 on the weekend which was really, really good !

Re: April 2018 purchases
Lots of secondary characteristics, especially honeyed notes, with the Pinot shining through. I’ve found some 90s with a decent whack of Pinot are quite sherried, but this one wasn’t. I thought this was my last bottle, but CT shows one more. I will look at it in a few years as it has plenty of life left. On the night it was better than the DP 1990, but not in the same ballpark as the 85 and 73 DPs.Mahmoud Ali wrote:Good to hear that Mike. How developed was it if I may ask. I know I’m in the minority, but I prefer many 1990s over their 1988 counterparts.

Re: April 2018 purchases
I've been looking for the Bricco del Viole for a while - found someone selling it, but by the time I got around to putting an order together, it had sold out. Annoying! I visited Vajra last year, they have a beautiful winery (by Piemontese standards, anyway), and some interesting wines on tasting (especially the whites).
Anyway, I'm in heavy-moratorium mode, but I went to a Coriole tasting the other day, and was really impressed all-round. I only picked up the Cabernet & Shiraz (estate offerings, not the Lloyd), but the Fiano was a great wine, and the Barbera & Nero d'Avola were both well made, comparable in style & quality to their Italian counterparts. The Sangiovese was a little less typical, having a bit less character than a Chianti, a bit less structure than a Brunello - apparently they don't make a Super-Tuscan style blend at the moment, but reckon they may do better with that than a straight-up varietal Sangiovese.

Re: April 2018 purchases
BdV reminds me of Mascarello ten years ago. Cheap though high levels of latent interest. It is unique due site and altitude. An important Barolo to squirrel away.asajoseph wrote:I've been looking for the Bricco del Viole for a while - found someone selling it, but by the time I got around to putting an order together, it had sold out. I look forward to trying the 2001's !

Re: April 2018 purchases
Tyrrell's wines due for payment in September but essentially 'purchased'.
2018's pending birth of my first Nephew/Niece and very hopeful that 2018 is a good/very good/excellent vintage for the Hunter reds and Italy especially with a few hopeful nods to German Riesling and (subject to price) a mixed dozen from Burgundy and Bordeaux
Sold a few Italian Roses and Barolo's that I wasn't really digging for the price paid to justify the spend this month.
Pending:
3 x Vat 1 Semillon 2018
2 x Stevens Semillon 2018
1 x HVD Semillon 2018
3 x 4 Acres Shiraz 2017
2 x Old Patch Shiraz 2017
Paid for:
3 x Roagna Rosso Langhe 2012
2 x Benevelli Pierro Langhe 2016
2 x Azienda Agricola Etna Rosso 2016
3 x Azienda Agricola Rivaggi 2016
1 x Azienda Agricola Alberello
2 x Hoddles Creek 1er Pinot Noir 2015
4 x Willi Scaeffer Domprost Spatlese #10 - 2012
1 x Ravensworth Shiraz Viogner 2015
1 x Olek Bondonio Barbera D'Alba 2016

It had everything. Weight, length, acid, slight sweetness, fruit a plenty. 2017 Rieslings just keeps delivering. My only concern would be how it will age. It almost felt like it had age in it already it was that good. Not sure the acid will hold up to aging though. But that silky mouthfeel... Can't get over that weight.

Re: April 2018 purchases
The Petalumas are a touch riper than most Clare rieslings in recent years which would seem to be the case in 2017 based on your note. ThanksRossco wrote:I had this yesterday.
