Re: Right, what are we/you drinking now .. tonight

2012 Mike Press MP1 Shiraz 14.6% Screwcap. Light to medium bodied with a sour cherry, earth and pepper and a little vanillin that seemed to mostly blow off shortly after opening. Good, but not particularly rich or intense, and consequently the alcohol is more prominent. It has some nice mid-palate ...

Re: August Purchases

picked up a case of Primo Estate's new sangiovese. 2014 vintage, first release of a new wine for them, so cellar door only. ...and it's pretty good. Dark clear red, cherries, leather and a bit of alcohol on the nose. More body than it looks like it ought to have, I suspect from a bit of residual sug...

Re: Sparkling Shiraz

Primo Estate Joseph for serious encounters, and Seppelts Original for the quaff. The Primo really is a special special wine though. Darenberg peppermint paddock is a bit of fun too, and is a strange and striking shade of indigo. Rumball NV has way too heavy dosage for my tastes. I find it too sweet ...

Re: Birth year wines

I got 3 each of Primo's Moda and Angel Gully 2012 for my boy Joseph's birth year. Reasonably priced wine of superlative quality that will easily travel the distance to his 21st, if I let it... I have some clare Riesling that I have pit aside as well, although I suspect that will be sacrificed before...

Oh, yeah, and the largest format I have owned would be 4L of Debortoli Premium Shiraz Cabernet NV. I think the biblical name for the format is Goon. :)
Magnums are a PITA for me, they don't fit comfortably in the vintec.

Re: Cork vs Screwcap - Any Recent Comparisons?

I wonder if there are subtleties in the wine-making process where wines can be optimised for bottling under one or the other closure? Margaux clearly have fine tuned their winemaking on the assumption that the product will be bottled under cork, and have then just bottled that wine under a variety o...

Re: November Purchases

I finally caved and bought 3 x 2012 Penfolds Bin 389 One will be a present for my wife's sister who has just finished her law degree (it is her favourite wine, and the last bottle of 389 she opened to celebrate finishing was oxidised, probably from a banged up screw cap seal). Interestingly, and bot...

Re: Hot Weather Purchases

I've had a case of wine cooked on the way to brissy - half the bottles had their corks pushed partway out of bottle necks. The winery was very generous in replacing the case (many thanks to Lazy Ballerina folk!) But I have always felt bad for them having to bear the cost of my bad decision. I simply...

2000 Krug Vintage Brut

okay... I've just seen 2000 Krug advertised at $260/bottle The last time I bought some (back in those carefree pre-mortgage, pre-family days of impulse spending) it was the 1998 Vintage and was going for over $500. what's the catch? I can't imagine that the retailers enjoy a huge markup on Krug, cer...

Re: Thoughts on wedding wines (Champagnes, Whites and Reds)

Probably a reasonable approach in the end. You don't want to over think wine catering at a wedding, as most people are just happy to get smashed on free booze and are not generally too picky. My wife and I had a lunch time reception and served abundant quantities of windy pinot from the much overhyp...

Era at Southbank has a great bottle shop, and their Flight bar seems an interesting concept. 1889 Enoteca in south Brisbane has a truly outstanding wine list and apparently a wine store too, but the food is somewhat overpriced and nothing special in my experience. 5ifth Element on southbank has enom...

knocked over an Arras Grand Vintage 2004 last weekend with the missus. Bloody Delicious. Complex yeasty nose with a rich, and mouthfilling palate that was both clean and very, very long. Just read this from Halliday in regard to the 2012 Metala White Label : 'A 60/40% blend, with 518,000 bottles made' I knew they made a lot, but not that much Surely with that many made there has to be some batch variation and hence bottle variation... Re: July 2014 Purchases

The fruit in the 2012 Metala White Label is big, good, and pretty seamlessly integrated between the cab and the shiraz - plums, blackcurrants, a touch of cedar and eucalypt. The oak is still hanging way out there, finishing with a touch of resinous bitterness when first opened, but settles down afte...

Foggo in McLaren Vale have ~100yo shiraz vines, and make a shiraz sourced exclusively from that vineyard. Their Grenache vines are a few years younger (~90yo?) whilst their Cab vines are relative pups at ~50yo.

I had an '09 Tahbilk Riesling last week (from a musuem release mixed doz) and found the nose pretty good - as you describe, floral and a bit minerally/bath salty and full of promise, but found the palate flabby and dull. Bit sweet, bit phenolic and not enough acidity to balance. Everything else in t...

Re: wine match with pesto

I'd go with a vermentino, a marsanne or a rousanne (or primo estate's colombard for that matter). Sav blanc can work, but it can also go horrible wrong if the aromatics end up clashing with the basil.
