Re: BYO restaurants in Perth

Being a wine wanker I’m happy to take my own glasses and have done to all of the above. Guilty of this crime too. In fact, I even smashed one of my Riedel Vinum Extremes on the way home from Kiri one night Should add Regal on Roe to this list. Haven't been out in a while but assuming it's still there

Re: Pinot Shiraz blends

"Thousand Candles" by William Downie is a Shiraz Pinot blend. 2011 was a Shiraz Pinot with a splash of Sauvignon Blanc, 2012 was Shiraz Pinot and 2013 was the same as 2011. I have 3 of the 2012's in the cellar but haven't tried one yet. 2011 had sav blanc or riesling as well A dire wine T...

Re: Pinot Shiraz blends

The best pinot shiraz blend I had was the 2013 Arete LDR (light dry red). Unfortunately pinot shiraz blends are not very popular, which may explain why Arete no longer exists :(

Re: Penfolds Re-corking Clinics 2016

Thanks for that. I've seen a bottle of 1976 Grange with an unusually high fill level, as per below: http://res3.graysonline.com/handlers/imagehandler.ashx?t=sh&id=12775368&ts=636039840816970000&index=0&s=gl Doesn't mention anything about being cliniced, but given the high level and r...

Re: Penfolds Re-corking Clinics 2016

What happens at the recorking clinic? Say if I had a 70's bottling with a white capsule, is it replaced with a white capsule or a red one? Do they mark on the bottle that the wine has been "clinic-ed", assuming that the wine is still sound?

Re: GRAND CRU CABERNET SAUVIGNON TASTING 20 APRIL 2016

That is a rather eclectic mix of wines. Thought the Cape Mentelle would have been a clear winner, but you never know on the night. And where's the parochialism, only 2 WA wines!

The Balnaves sounds like a bargain. These were being liquidated as part of the failed Heritage scheme for about $10 each

Re: Sparkling Red recommendations?

Tried a home made sparkling Shiraz. Put a young oaky Shiraz in freezer for 4 hours. Then decanted into sodastream machine. Topped up with a dose of vintage port. Put in some CO2, but fizzed over and made a bit of a mess. Good flavour, but bead very subtle and lacked persistence. I think this recipe...

Go for the Lalique 100 points by James Suckling. I think James Suckling gives them 100 points http://www.lalique.com/media/products/large/8-100-points-universal-glass.jpg When you pass on those, the Zaltos then look a bargain. If these are also too expensive, perhaps consider the Gabriel Glas Gold E...

Re: Some short notes from McLaren Vale/Barossa Trip

Think of it like this. Turkey Flat produces about 10,000 cases of shiraz each vintage. If they take out 2 barrels (50 cases) then that's only 0.5% of total shiraz production. If you want to see if you can taste the difference, pour yourself a 200ml glass of wine, then pour another 200ml glass alongs...

2012 Pichler Krutzler Klostersatz Gruner Veltliner (screwcap) impressive tall bottle, which even shades a standard Riesling bottle. Good to see an old world white in a screwcap too.
