Smithy, I love the Warrabilla wines and good to see recent press in WFM and AGT Wine. I'm always impressed with the gorgeous fruit's ability to hide the alcohol - sure you can tell it's a big wine but it doesn't have that burning feeling that other high alc wines do, nor is there ever a hint of "dea...

Agree on the Mamre Brooks - great value, but watch out even more for the 02s. Tried both of them at the RQWS last year and they are stunning! I was more excited about the 02 MB Cab than I was about the Eighth Maker - both of the above won top trophies. Hopefully they will be available for the $16.99...

I tried one of these around New Year and concur. Drinking superbly, but no hurry - it'll go another 5-8yrs at least.

I sincerely hope that this is false. I think OLW have distinguished themselves in the last few years by offer excellent quality wines at affordable prices, performing above their price points. Let's hope for the "Steve Hoff approach" to pricing - if it costs double to make, charge double for it - I'...

Redbacks used to be my favourite Friday afternoon mind numbing agent when I was a single lad, and I tried one at a wedding about a month ago and it just didn't do it for me. I think it was the texture (watery) combined with a very hard acidic edge. Simm, I just read an article about how they've fid...

Dear Simm, I've always preferred Cascade Light to Boags Light (same applies to the heavies) - to each his own! I find a lot of light beers can have a cloying "fake malt" flavour and a soapiness which I dislike. The Cascade Summer Blonde is great, and easily the best of their Four Seasons (I haven't ...

Brian, I'm another one who'll pass on the Pennies this year. I might buy 2 389s for the vertical, but I simply cannot justify $35-40 (and from early market pre-releases, it looks like $35 is as low as it will get). Let's look at the competition- what can I buy for $35-40? Tim Adams Aberfeldy - $38 f...

Had the 2001 RS on New Years Eve. Initially opened quite hard with some green notes and very tight. Some enjoyed it. I drank the remaining third over the space of three more days, and it got better and better, more opulent and fruit rich, but still with a fair bit of structure. The earlier post sugg...

Dear Alan, I am a huge fan of Wendouree wines and they are indeed extremely rare and sought after. The style is quite unique - incredible fruit concentration from 100+ yr old vines, formidable tannin structure, higher acid than most RP style wines and modest (13.5-14%) alcohol and modest oak. They a...

Dear Ron, 2002 certainly looks like being an outstanding vintage. The Barossa and McLaren Vale were particularly good, with Coonawarra less so. Corcoran, I agree with your assessment of 98s. There's been a big "backlash" against 98s here in Australia in the media and the forums, with a lot of people jumping on the bandwagon of saying that they're already falling apart, that 99s will prove better, analogising btwn 90 and 91 etc. I think this...

I'd prefer to pay a bit extra for eg the Hanging Rock Heathcote shiraz or the delightful Dominique Portet Heathcote shiraz 01. Brian, Agreed on the Portet. I was at CD a month ago and was pretty impressed with the whole range, especially the shiraz. The 01 had complex green pepper and eucalypt back...

Not sure if it's available in Melbourne but the Knappstein Enterprise Cab Sauv 2000 should be out by now (the 1999 has been around a while) and would fit that price bracket. You may find a store which stocks Wendouree - strictly speaking on release it fits that price bracket, but you'd be up for ~$7...

Of those which I've tried, I'd rate the Hanisch, BP and Creek Block the highest, not in a particular order. (Although the Creek Block REALLY blew me away on release, I've not tried it since).
