Hi folks.
I'm hoping to pick up a birth year wine, year being 2002. I've heard that the vintage is generally a good one but am hoping someone could provide some specifics on age worthy reds to look out for (region, maker etc.).
Cheers

Very few ageworthy 02 Reds have been released yet. There will be a lot of excellent stuff released over the next four years. Generally, just look for the usual suspects - Penfolds Grange, 707, RWT and perhaps St Henri; Seppelt St Peters; Cullen Diana Madeline; Mt Mary Quintet; Petaluma Coonawarra; Rockford Basket Press and a million others. There will be an awful lot of good 02 Reds going around. Just buy a copy of Halliday or Oliver; if a red wine is generally good, the 02 will probably be exceptional.
Of those already released, Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier (if you can find it...good luck), Warrabilla Reserve reds, Jasper Hill Georgia's Paddock, Mr Riggs Shiraz.
In slightly lower price brackets, consider Wynn's Cab Sav, Penfolds Bin 389, Majella, Bowen, Orlando St Hugo.
There are also a couple of Australian VPs worth looking at - Stanton and Killeen, D'Arenberg Vintage Fortified Shiraz or (if you can find it and want to splash out) Clarendon Hills Turbo, which will start to peak when the child has paid off his mortgage.

Dear Ron,
2002 certainly looks like being an outstanding vintage. The Barossa and McLaren Vale were particularly good, with Coonawarra less so.
I've tried the 2002 RWT and it is phenomenal - definitely a must if the budget allows.
Beyond that, anything high level Barossa or McLaren or Clare - can't wait to try the 2002 Aberfeldy if his basic shiraz is anything to go by - also the Aberfeldy remains so affordable at ~$40. The usual suspects - Rockford, Turkey Flat, Wendouree, Fox Creek Reserve (even the Short Row is excellent at low $20s), wil all be released next year.
From Victoria, the Warrabilla 2002 are absolutely massive wines - have the fruit to last 20 years, very high alcohol (16-17%!) - depends on who you believe on the alcohol debate as to whether these will last or not (I haven't made my mind up on this but at $22 I'm willing to take the chance. Not sure what 2002 was like in the Grampians/Pyrenees but have tried the 2002 St Peters and it is excellent as always.
Not sure what 2002 was like in WA - obviously all the hype is around 2001 at the moment.
Just a few random ideas - I'm sure there's heaps more suggestions around.
Cheers
