Mount Langi Ghiran Billi Billi Shiraz 2002

Reasonabley light bodied but showing the peppery, spicy cooler climate characteristics that I love. Certainly better for being a straight shiraz rather than the blend of prior vintages and good value at $14 per bottle.

This figure (and we all know itÂ’s a guesstimate but thatÂ’s fine for the purposes of the debate) means that (if you are lucky) one bottle in 20 with a cork will seal as tightly as a Stelvin. Given that number is so incredibly low, then surely, whilst itÂ’s technica...

Others that are in that range at times and at times have been good include the Leasingham Bastion reds, the Stonehaven stepping stone cab sav, the Seppelt Victorian reserve shiraz, Hardys Oomoo, the occassional cleanskin such as the Trevor Mast shiraz and a shiraz/viognier I got from one of the chai...

Australian wooded reds and Thai food is not a good combo

I have noted a campaign by some on this board who have been foolhardy enough to exclude themselves from a large number of wine varieties and styles to suggest that Thai food and shiraz or durif is a good combination. It is a poor combination compared to a vast number of other wine matches. The tanni...

As to the rest, a selection of 94, 96 and 98 reds (yet to make specific choices)

You won't get Leasingham Classic Clare for under $25, you might mean Bin 61.

Don't forget Seppelt Chalambar, Saltram Mamre Brook, Fox Creek Short Row and Tyrells Rufus Stone as other possibilities.

Two recent favs are for red, Chalambar (00 or 01) and Pewsey Vale Reisling 03.

For ultra cheapies, the Yalumba Y viognier ($8 per bottle) is a very smart wine for the price and Houghton Sem Sauv Blanc is good cheapy to match with spicy Thai food.

For what its worth, I think it is worth paying the small premium to go to the next step in that range, Chalambar. More of everything and exceptional value.

If you like that style of wine, would also recommend the 2000 Bin End Trevor Mast Victorian shiraz currently be flogged by First Estate for $8.50 per bot. by the doz.

A perfect seal may just give you a perfect wine 10 years down the track, but perfect in the sense it doesn't taste any different to the day it was bottled, not what we want. Call it rhetorical drivel all you like. The facts are:- 1. There is huge variation as to the sealing capabilities of corks, even within the same batch of supposed same quality corks. 2. There is still dissent within the wine industry as to whether the aging process is mainly oxidative or mainly red...
