Seppelt Victorian Premium Reserve Shiraz '02

Post by Mishy »

2002 Seppelt Shiraz Reserve Bin - Victoria, Australia (11/1/2004)
14.5 % Alc
23$C
This is raw, deep black fruit power, no pussy American oaky or fancy assed Parkered sweet jam, just pure unadulterated peppery Shiraz the way it should be made. Roasted coffee, currant, dark semi-sweet chocolate and deep plum give it a very masculine approach. In the future I would decant this prior for about an hour+, as this is extremely edgy with tannic structure. I was quite surprised and impressed with this wine, as although I read the reports that this was an extremely admiral effort for Seppelt, I can't say I expected such forcefulness of fruit and tannin. The finish is rich with loads of peppery asphalt tannins and deep blackcurrant fruit. Tight at first, somewhat unrelenting though full and aggressive, at this price-point I think I actually got a 40$C wine for 23$C.

For what its worth, I think it is worth paying the small premium to go to the next step in that range, Chalambar. More of everything and exceptional value.

I like the 2002 Seppelt Victorian too, though I liked the 2001 better, and I got a glimpse of the 2003 the other day (with a stelvin top) and I probably liked that the best of the three. Good on you seppelt!

Matthew,
I wish I had known this about the Chalambar in September when I spyed it on a shelf while on vacation in another city. It was a resonable price too !
I haven't yet seen it around here........
