No, just dropped a letter off the end of my surname.

I hear they'll correct it for the $2000 e-book. :P

If there was a locally printed and bound ( S Aust. ) book of 130 odd pages, on 200 gsm stock, measuring 18inches by about 20 inches, of say either Phar Lap or Peter Brock, with some amazing, beautifully presented photos, with a limited print run of say under 1750 copies (ever), do you think they'd ...

I loved this wine when I tried it several years ago. And the 2004. But in many years, I find the Greenock Creek wines overly alcoholic.

I'd like to know where all that rain has been falling.. Perhaps Dave was referring to the States? I was in Mornington, Barossa/Eden and out in Western Australia in March and everyone remarked on how dry things had been (6 months without rain in some cases). Dave's usually reasonably good, so perhap...

I tend to agree these aren't for long keeping. The 2009 is delicious and remarkably complex now--so why wait? There's no rule that says wines have to get better with age.

Michael, Yes, in general there's been a notable stylistic change over the years, although I admit to wondering if winemakers are now sometimes almost too obsessed with seeking "fine-ness" at the expense of flavor. Just checked: my original note from 2002 calls the wine "tightly wound,...

Surprisingly good Petaluma Chard

Last night I brought a bottle of 1999 Tiers Vineyard Chardonnay to dinner with pretty low expectations. So low, that I brought a bottle of 2006 Tappanapa Tiers Vineyard Chard as a backup. Most of the New World Chardonnays I've had at 12 years of age are tired, but this '99 was remarkably good: mediu...

Ian,

Thanks for the notes. As you might expect, we are a couple of vintages behind here in the States--the 2007 Beauty and Beast are current.

I've typically preferred the Beauty to the Beast in the past. Never seen the Clos Otto here.

Re: November- What are we buying

Loztralia, The '09 Ata Rangi is reputed to be darn good. It's a buy for me every year if I can find it--it's sometimes tough here in the U.S. Got to try the '09 Dry River, that's an awfully nice Pinot too (bottled last week, I think). One to pick up when it is released. The '09 Dry River Chard looks...

Some 2001 Châteauneufs: Beaucastel, Clos des Papes, Pegau. Love the vintage, and no more expensive (sometimes less) than 2007s.

Re: American wine recommendations

With the caveat that I am on the opposite coast, I've ordered from a couple of Southern California retailers that have big selections: WineExchange (www.winex.com) and Woodland Hills Wine Company (www.whwc.com). As others have said, Cabernet may be tough under $50, but Syrah and Zin will be easier. ...

Rens, Because of our distribution system over here, most liquor stores will carry the big brands, which will not end up wowing you. Even if he's not going to the winery, he'll have to go to a more specialized wine shop to find Wow wines. Do you know where he's going to be traveling? It might be poss...

Re: Northern Rhone 2007 Tasting

Nice lineup! The Offerus is a negociant wine from Chave. There's also an estate St. Joseph that is a big step up. The Clape is awesome and I suspect that you are right about it being a 20-year wine. When it comes to Ogier v Jamet, I tend to favor Jamet. If you ever get to taste the '91, it will make...

I'm continually amazed at how broad a reach a single question on the Internet can have. Through Reid and Sarah at Kaesler I got a recent tasting note on the wine from Paul Bridgeman at YY. Of course, if anyone else has had the wine recently, I'd love to hear, but I'm going to grab a couple of bottle...

Thoughts on '94 Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz?

Anyone have recent experience with this wine? Have a source for what seems to be a good price, but maybe it's past it?

Thanks in advance,

Re: Langhorne Creek and Fleurieu Peninsula (minus McLaren Vale)

Considering the lack of competition, the pub in Langhorne Creek is much better than it has to be.

Wineries you might consider in the Creek: Bleasdale, Bremerton, Lake Breeze, Temple Bruer (be prepared for some offbeat stuff). Decent lunch/platters at Bremerton.

Stonecroft sold

Just saw this: http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/bu ... tor-racing

Any reactions from those geographically closer to the situation?

Seems to me Limmer deserves a ton of credit for his Syrah and Gewürz. Hope that the new owners maintain his standards.

Joe, you must be shopping at McArthur Liquors here in the DC area. I happened to be in there a few minutes after the email arrived and picked up the 05 Kaesler Old Vine Shiraz for $28US and the 05 Noon Eclipse for $40US. The Eclipse price is really silly. They still have some of the 04 Factor...wor...

Indeed. Just landed '04 The Factor for $75 and '98 E&E for $50 here in the States. Really happy to get the E&E since I had my last bottle in '09 and it was great.

Mark & Ian,

Funny to read you guys talking about the NFL. Just watched the end of the Saints-Dolphins game after seeing my Buffalo Bills win another ugly game.

The Saints do look good.

I think suggested retail here for the Brokenwood Shiraz is $125.
