Re: A new decade, Jan 2010 - What have you been buying?
I'm saving my meagre post-Christmas pennies to pick up a case or two of 2005 Sandalford Estate Reserve Shiraz. 40% off from cellar door at the moment which brings it more or less into the everyday drinking price bracket - and it's a very, very impressive wine in general, let alone for that particular role.

Yip, on holiday doing plenty of climbing.
I open my account this decade with:
2007 Villa Maria Cellar Selection Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon. $11.98 at Pak n Save New Plymouth. Has anyone ever bought a higher quality red wine for less dosh than this?? If so you would have to be pretty pleased!

I have not had an old Bordeaux over the festive saison, but we drunk a few old Burgundies. We tasted them blind:
Louis Trapet Chambertin 1973: Superb wine, soft and silky but still with a lot of flavours and a long, sweet finish.
Domaine Bertheau et Fils Chambolle Musigny Amoureuses 1979: I opened the bottle about two hours before drinking, was a bit closed at the beginning but then got better and better. Also very silky and still tasting very fresh.
But the highlight was again a Californian Pinot: Acacia Reserve Pinot Noir St. Clair Vineyard 1986
I had this one the second time (the first bottle was the wine of the year for me). Again, also this bottle was mind blowing. Despite the age, the wine is still going very strong but nicely balanced now, pure silk, fresh and wonderful flavours. My brother rated the wine 20/20 although I did not tell him anything about the experience I had with the first bottle. Unfortunately, I have only one left.
We are probably going to have a Bordeaux tasting later this month, so I will let you know how they are going.
Cheers and happy drinking.

Re: A new decade, Jan 2010 - What have you been buying?
Most of these purchased during a couple of days in Hawkes Bay. Didn't get to many wineries, but esp. enjoyed visits to Church Road -- full range of '07 Cuve reds is excellent -- and Vidal, which had pretty well all their Reserve wines open for tasting. '07 Reserve Chard in particular was singing, with the prominent stonefruit character that they (& Stonecroft) do so well, & the '06 Reserve Syrah was also very impressive.
2007 Church Road Reserve Cabernet Merlot
2008 Church Road Reserve Syrah (at the winery -- apparently just released -- just bought the one bottle to try)
2005 Church Road Tom
2007 Vidal Reserve Chardonnay
2006 Vidal Reserve Syrah
2009 Felton Road Riesling
2007 Trinity Hill Homage Syrah
Cheers

Noice as they say over in the Land of the Long White Wine. This has been getting the big thumbs up from all most all of the critics I have seen who reviewed 2008. (The Clonakilla SV 2008 will also be awesome in another 6 or 7 years.)

Went to the Hunter:
3x 2005 Mount Pleasant Maurice O'Shea Shiraz
3x 2005 Mount Pleasant OP&OH Shiraz
3x 2005 Mount Pleasant Rosehill Shiraz
3x 2006 Audrey Wilkinson Museum Reserve Shiraz
6x 2007 Tulloch JYT Selection Shiraz
Was really keen to get some good & archetypal Hunter shiraz.
Was gutted a little to find that a number of the 2007 shiraz's that I wanted to taste & buy (e.g. Tyrrells Old Patch & 4 Acres, Tulloch Private Bin) were no longer available. But I guess you all knew this. Was also dissappointed to find that Lakes Folly was closed due to them being all sold out.
Got a bit carried away at Mount Pleasant but I really liked their 2005 shiraz range.
Did not plan to get anything at Audrey Wilkinson but got a bit sucked in by the cellar door experience.
The 2007 Tulloch JYT Selection Shiraz is a new release from Tulloch. It is 95% Hunter and 5% McLaren Vale which is weird I guess however it tasted great and I decided it was the closest I'd get to the 2007 Private Bin. Person there told me that the Hunter grapes come from the same vineyard as the Private Bin so that sealed it for me.

Yep, 2010 is the end of the decade. 1 Jan 2001 was the first day of it. Some people get confused. 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010. Count 'em up! If 2010 was the starting year of a new decade, that decade would end 31 December 2019. Decades end in years ending with zero and start with years ending in one.
Pretty simple really.

Yes, how annoying that we all celebrated the new millennium on Jan 1 2000, we should have been tucked up in bed waiting for the following year.... hmm... Jan 1 2001, much more exciting
Of course you're right, but 2000 was still worth celebrating, and a 0.1% error rate is close enough. And besides it's a brain fact that we humans prefer round numbers.
Cheers

Just 750s but at a pretty good price. I was led to believe they didn't make magnums of the 96 (to my chagrin).

Sound like the UWC sale. I am saving my $$ this year for the 2009 bdx campaigns. I know the vintage has been hyped but the prices are still coming off a low base and there should be some decent wine to buy given the US and Europe are still not really out of the recession.

That's a great price for now. Back then, I think the 03 would have been released for around that much (or less), but in the last 5 years especially, this wine has increased dramatically in price. Still worth it though...

Andrew if you want to feel vaguely green, check out Rieslingfan's collection on cellartracker. You know him from another site.I am not often jealous (apart from Moug and Redwine's purchases) but this worked. An awesome collection of Donnhoffs.
