Re: What unpopular (wine) opinions do you have?
Increasingly, I have noticed more and more people in the sales arm of this industry loudly espouse, or at least tacitly accept the virtues of biodynamics, the efficacy of it's methods and the veracity of it's claims. The proof would appear to be in the pudding, as there are many big name BD producer...

Re: Penfolds 2015 release...
Geez you guys are quick to jump on someone. Decent serve equalled about 50% more than the normal crap pour not half a glass. I hardly see how that breaches responsible serving of alcohol. Still I wasn't there to assess my own sobriety at that moment - stone cold sober at about 3.00 p.m. on sat arvo...

Re: Penfolds 2015 release...
Just attended my local dans for a taste. Approached the tasting area, all the bins out, open and ready go. No staff serving - hesitated for a minute looked around and poured my own. Decent serve I might add. Not to be a dick but please don't do this. Against OHS and RSA protocol, and Dans are stick...

Re: Help to track down Ridge Lytton Springs
Cam is right. I've heard nobody currently imports Ridge, which is a shame. But coles owns a particular big-name liquor retailer who's name I'm forbidden from mentioning in these parts, and that's where random vintages of Lytton Springs Zinfandel field blend (feat. petit sirah) can still be found. Ne...

Re: How much for Grange?
Grange is a very good wine. It's an icon of our country, in fact. I don't personally have any beef with the fact that it's multi-regional either, I think that was a daring idea that redefined Australian and new world viticulture. It's a consistently good wine with a long track record of ageing (Thou...

Re: 1998 Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon
A couple of weeks ago I opened a 99 Vat 1 with quite pronounced TCA. The glad-wrap trick worked to some extent but took away a fair bit of the volatiles. The bottle ended up going down the sink Why wouldn't you send the bottle back to Tyrrells? At least call them. You would get another bottle of Va...

Re: 1998 Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon
Heard so many good things about the 98 and 99 Vat 1. I love aged semillon but now they're under screwcap, I'll have to wait a lot longer to try one at an advanced level of maturity. Over the last few years, I've been chasing the old Tyrrell's semillon dragon, and been disappointed time and time agai...

Re: Melbourne Offline - Fri June 19
Good points, I really did bring the Bourdy out of a motivation to show a different side of Chardonnay that maybe others hadn't a chance to try. I'm not some obscurity-worshipping wine hipster, but at the same time, life's too short to only try one sort of wine, you know. Ozzie, I think the differenc...

Oh and Ozzie, Jean Bourdy is the full name of the producer of that Cotes du Jura I bought.
Was fun seeing the reactions of people first trying that
not sure everyone loved it as much as I did though!

Re: The next step up in class.
All of those wines and styles are pretty unique to Australia I would say. A lot of these producers make higher quality versions of those wines even. Keep experimenting and trying different producers though, but also start to look for things outside the matrix of S.A Shiraz and Cab. There are lots of...

Re: WSET courses
Did mine through work, highly recommend. Depends on the teacher though. Gives a good perspective of international wines, but level 2 is a fairly broad brush and doesn't go into too many specifics. Keep in mind that it's written from the perspective of a British supermarket shopper, and so It's hard ...

Re: Biodynamic wines = batsh*t crazy
You probably won't find much disagreement here. I could go on and on about this topic, but whenever I exert mental energy on this sort of voodoo shit, I have to ask myself, 'why? Who cares?!' Indeed, who actually cares? Those of us with an interest in viticulture have encountered articles about it, ...

Re: Cork vs Screwcap - Any Recent Comparisons?
Although it sounds like it wasn't too bad and it had higher than normal acidity..which for Zin is good if you want it to age...But comparing wines from a different vintage doesn't really do much for this type of comparison... Absolutely right, so allow me to step out of the way to make room for all...

Re: Cork vs Screwcap - Any Recent Comparisons?
Both were bought at auction at the same time from the same vendor. What I make of this, is perhaps the rate of ageing required for screwcapped reds of this sort is too long for my patience. Or perhaps there were winemaking and bottling subtleties that hadn't been quite resolved in this wineries fir...

Re: Cork vs Screwcap - Any Recent Comparisons?
Just a little anecdotal data to chew on. Needs to be prefaced with the fact that I'm a huge fan of screwcaps, half my cellar (50+ bottles) is under screwcap. 1 x Cape Mentelle 2002 Zinfandel under cork, opened September 2014. Wonderful, integrated, even at 16.5%, no hint of the alcohol, didn't even ...
