BYO Restaurants in Perth

Hello Perthites,

Will be in Perth late Nov and am looking for a good restaurant that allows BYO wine in the CBD/Inner city area, preferably Italian/French although will consider anything. If nothing fits the bill what are the best fully licenced options for a rather special occasion ?.

I know it's not CBD but the Grand Mellie in Fremantle is a French place which has been getting rave reviews, and is completely BYO with only a tiny corkage fee.

I went about a month ago and wasn't blown away, but some of the other people I was with were pretty happy.

Otherwise Perth is a sea of mediocrity, with only a few standouts which are all fully licensed eg Must, Jackson's and Star Anise. Must is worth a look though for the excellent by the glass list (great food as well), as is Lamont's in Cottesloe.

If you want a really good Italian BYO, then try Da Bruno's in Inglewood - about 10 minutes by car north of Perth. The prices aren't cheap - it is basically a 5-star that hasn't got a liquor licence yet, and you can expect to spend $150 for two people.

Bruno is a chef 'par excellence' (sorry, wrong language) and everything is hand made. The menu is in Italian on a chalkboard (in each room of the converted house) and the waiting staff explain each dish in exquisite detail, before being asked by baffled patrons "what was in the second dish again?" :lol:

Regardless, GREAT food, intimate surroundings and very good service. The fact that it is BYO for me is a bonus, not a liability.

Grand Mellie is very good indeed but prices have lept skyward in recent months. Now value is fair.

Agree with Must and Jackson's. Yet to visit Star Anise. Heard they do a BYO night during the week which might be interesting.

Despite the mediocrity there are a few that are good value in any city. K's Restaurant in Northbridge where several offlines have been held is good value. As is Zen japanese restaurant in Subiaco. The first a walk from the CBD and the latter a 10 minute train or taxi ride away.

Friends at the Hyatt and Balthazar in the CBD have great winelists, but I'd have to agree with waitersfriend, Da Brunos has some great meals on offer and BYO is a bonus.

the other place which is a bit out of town too, is Clarkes of North Beach, won a number of gold plates recently.
but he ca only cater for small numbers so you should book early if you decide to go

Way out of town, but "le Paris Brest" in Kalamunda always rings my bell.

Excellent food, BYO every night, excellent decanters and glasses, and reasonable prices
