Just been gifted...
3 pristine condition (apparently thermostat controlled) Tyrrell's Hunter Valley Dry Red (Vat 5) from years 1978, 1988 and 1989.
Anyone have an idea how these are or what they may be worth?

Are you Chinese ? Thinking immediately about money rather than drinking a generous gift.

That's just a bit racist isn't it?
never underestimate the predictability of stupidity

Read "Thirsty Dragon" then comment.

No, don't have to. It is still racist. Stereotyping at best.

I'm not Chinese and I'll ignore the racist undertone.
I wasn't thinking to monetise on the gift but rather get a sense of the wine's value as I haven't seen it before. I didn't realise I'd be so unwelcome...

Not at all Chris. From what I understand the Chinese are only interested in Bordeaux and Burgundy. When it comes to Australian wine they only know about Penfold's and with a name Vat 5 he or she would assume that it has something to do with the tax rate. No, clearly the poster is likely to be an Aussie for who else would know about the Hunter Valley and Tyrrells. Yes, we're talking about an Aussie, and most likely a Sydneysider, for they are most likely to think that an obscure Vat wine from the Hunter would be worth money. On the other hand it might be someone from Melbourne, perhaps what they call a Callingwood supporter. Apparently there are many about in Melbourne.
Cheers ................... Mahmoud.

The prime question here is "how these are" and secondly what they might be worth. The first suggests interest in their drinking condition and the second a curiosity about their value. But for the wealthy, price and value is the bane of all wine enthusiasts, as anyone on this forum knows. Well, except perhaps for Chris.

Someone gave them to me who is 92 years old and on their death bed. I don't want to be taking expensive wine off that person's hands even if they intend to gift to me on best intentions, it doesn't feel right even if I have no plans to sell. If it's just an aged botttle then I'd be happy to take and consume.
Thanks for being so judgemental.
So now that you want to put me in a box, I'll define it for you:
From Melbourne
Italian Mother, Australian Father
Korean Wife, grew up in Me prune, Beijing and Seoul
Now live in Singapore
Come at me. I've heard it all.

Sorry Dragzworthy, you posted between my two posts so I hope you see from my second that I am sympathetic to what I think your original post meant. It may not be clear in my first post (it's supposed to be subtle) but it is not you who is the Callingwood supporter.

Re: Just been gifted...
We seem to be posting at cross purposes Dragzworthy and I think it's quite amusing (well, I'm smiling as I write) despite the apparent misunderstanding.
I think any one of here who is gifted a wine they didn't know, especially an old one, would be interested in whether it was still any good. Furthurmore, they would also be interested in it's value (I know I would) so that they can place the wine in context and know where and when to serve it and on what occasions. Hope that clears things.
Mahmoud.

Re: Just been gifted...
Dragzworthy, your grandmother gave you the wine. She is 92 god bless her, and I hope she had a wonderful and fulfilling life. Give her the respect she deserves by gracefully accepting her gift as it is what she wants. The most important thing to do is remember her when you drink the wine.
Mahmoud.

Re: Just been gifted...
G'day Dragz, the wines although lovely old things are not really worth too much, so I wouldn't have any qualms about taking them. They may still be hanging in there by a thread if cellared well.
Langtons give the following prices from their website, I'm sure if you wanted to do an offline in Melbourne and bring them along there would be other appreciative wine tragics willing to have a sample. (only reason I suggest that, is they may have been more exposed to older wines and how they are drinking, most newcomers may not enjoy them)

Thanks Dave. I'd actually be keen on the offline but alas flying back very soon... always see the regulars posting about them and I'd truly love to time a trip around one in future.
Re: Just been gifted...
I'm loathe to wade into this, but FWIW
The original post really should have had the richness of detail that Dragzworthy later added. It would have avoided this shitstorm and I could very much understand how someone might read it the wrong way. Personally I agree with Mahmoud, that a dying gift is way more special than money. I've seen a few threads on wine for a over the years and the recurring theme of them is that the memories they bring back of the person, are worth more than any other wine in the world.
Chris
I hope in the cold light of the next day, that you realise your posts were out of order and in today's world were indeed racist. It would be a really good move to PM Dragzworthy an apology if you haven't already.
regards
Ian

This is obviously an extremely delicate situation. On the one hand you have a wonderful parting gift which has been lovingly stored and now deserves to be drunk with appreciation. On the other hand the wines are in Melbourne, you are soon to depart and as all true wine aficionados are aware, Melbournites fail to appreciate the subltes of beautiful old Hunter Valley wines: I believe the expression is pearls before swine.
Thankfully I have the perfect solution - as luck would have it, I am flying into Melbourne on Boxing Day from Sydney and would happily take the wines off your hands for a token gift which would not dishonour the giver. I can then taste and write notes that are worthy of such gems. Clearly a win win solution for all.

Edited for autocorrections which made no sense

Never let it be said we humble Sydneites aren't prepared to step up and help out our fellow travelers as they wander through the dark reaches of Mother Nature's forest along the path of wine enlightenment.
Only too happy to assist.
