3 pristine condition (apparently thermostat controlled) Tyrrell's Hunter Valley Dry Red (Vat 5) from years 1978, 1988 and 1989.

Anyone have an idea how these are or what they may be worth?

When it comes to Australian wine they only know about Penfold's and with a name Vat 5 he or she would assume that it has something to do with the tax rate. Yes, we're talking about an Aussie, and most likely a Sydneysider, for they are most likely to think that an obscure Vat wine from the Hunter would be worth money. Someone gave them to me who is 92 years old and on their death bed. I don't want to be taking expensive wine off that person's hands even if they intend to gift to me on best intentions, it doesn't feel right even if I have no plans to sell. If it's just an aged botttle then I'd be happy to take and consume.

We seem to be posting at cross purposes Dragzworthy and I think it's quite amusing (well, I'm smiling as I write) despite the apparent misunderstanding.

I think any one of here who is gifted a wine they didn't know, especially an old one, would be interested in whether it was still any good. Furthurmore, they would also be interested in it's value (I know I would) so that they can place the wine in context and know where and when to serve it and on what occasions. Hope that clears things.

G'day Dragz, the wines although lovely old things are not really worth too much, so I wouldn't have any qualms about taking them. They may still be hanging in there by a thread if cellared well.

Langtons give the following prices from their website, I'm sure if you wanted to do an offline in Melbourne and bring them along there would be other appreciative wine tragics willing to have a sample. (only reason I suggest that, is they may have been more exposed to older wines and how they are drinking, most newcomers may not enjoy them)

I'm loathe to wade into this, but FWIW

The original post really should have had the richness of detail that Dragzworthy later added. It would have avoided this shitstorm and I could very much understand how someone might read it the wrong way. Personally I agree with Mahmoud, that a dying gift is way more special than money. I've seen a few threads on wine for a over the years and the recurring theme of them is that the memories they bring back of the person, are worth more than any other wine in the world.
