What is your proposal, Ian?

The major concern is finding things to match what could end up being 5-6 rieslings by the time Allan brings his three - probably the best scenario whould be to have them with the bruschetta, followed by the house made pasta, with the beef breasola & other dishes more suited to reds following on from there.

As it turns out an annual club dinner which I can't get out of has come up within a couple of days of the offline, so it looks like I will probably have to drop out anyway. :(

Have fun guys, and I look forward to reading how it went.

Cheers,
Ian

I'm so sorry to hear that Ian - we can't persuade you to have two wine nights in close proximity can we? :D

We will certainly keep you posted on how it goes!

Ian

I hope that you won't let the fact that you are probably not coming deter you from reviewing people's suggested wines. Without you to scrutinise offerings to make sure they are fit for purpose there could be anarchy.

On a related note I second Paul's suggestion that you should go to both wine dinners. Any photos taken at the event won't be the same without the Star Trek style lens flare from your mighty cranium.

For what it is worth, I am happy with the Riesling/Shiraz theme. I suspect that our enjoyment of the food and wine won't be fatally impaired by a less than classical match of food to wine.

Cheers

Mark

I know I won't feel right without having whatever wine I bring not meeting Ian's approval ;)

Another roll call and wine listing that we know so far:
Paul & Jas & Justin+2 (Heggie's Vineyard Botrytis Riesling +at least 2 if not 4 other bottles)
Waiters Friend (Capel Vale Whispering HIll Riesling 2000 and 2008, Capel Vale Whispering Hill Shiraz 2008, Capel Vale Kinnaird Shiraz 2000, Houghtons Frankland River/Gladstones 1999-2001)
Sarah (+1? - Is Matt coming?)
Mark & Gail
Steve
Gavin
Wayno
Seven?

Just to let you all know, I need final numbers by Thursday 25 August, so if you drop out after then, there may well be a cancellation fee. We can fit a lot more at the table though, so please feel free to invite others!

Could people please let me know what wines they are bringing?

G'day Ian

A shame if you can't make it. I'm delighted and pleasantly surprised that this offline is occurring in the first place. After your initial acceptance, I was looking forward to meeting the person behind some of the best (and consistently good) tasting notes ever to grace this forum. It would be a bonus for me if you can join us.

Cheers

Sorry Allan, but it's looking really unlikely that I can commit before the 25th deadline. Two weeknight wine dinners the other side of town is going to be too much, especially at our busiest time of year when I'm working late nearly every night. I was initially thinking there would be a bit more of a break in between the two events, but it turns out to be a lot closer than I anticipated which makes it difficult to say the least. I'd only be able to give a day or so's notice, which may not suit Paul.

Cheers,
Ian

Will bring a bottle of bubbles to start, and old (70s?) riesling and maybe something for the dessert.

Right - Final numbers (bar Sarah's possible +1) are above. Mark, Steve, Gavin, do you have any idea as to what you'll be bringing?

No idea yet, Paul. I'm out of town until Tuesday or Wednesday, so I won't know until then.

Looking at the line up so far I'll try to take something cabernet or chardonnay based (ha! Something red or white or bubbly :D). There's enough wine on the way to make my standard two bottles thing completely unnecessary...

Just been out to the cellar, and the shiraz is all looking good - but I must have drunk all of my old Capel Vale rieslings.

No problem, I'm sure young and old Howard Parks will be an acceptable substitute, or something similar. Still 3 rieslings, 3 shiraz.

I'm looking forward to it.

A couple of points. Am I the only person bringing rieslings? In which case, WA will win hands down :) A couple of SA examples for contrast would be useful.

Secondly, I have inspected the cellar again, and you may notice subtle changes to the years of the rieslings I will bring.

Thirdly, Ian, if you decide at the last minute to turn up, I don't think anyone (especially the restaurant) will be alarmed. I'd like to see your tasting notes from this event.

Finally, thanks again Paul for putting this together. I'm looking forward to meeting you all, and finding out why each of you got into wine in the first place.

Cheers

A pleasure, Allan!

Just a quick update - I couldn't get my hands on a Heggie's Vineyard reserve, so I'll be bringing a Mount Horrocks Cordon Cut Riesling instead :)

Yum! I bought some of the 2009 when the delightful Sue and I were there in March 2010. We were told at the time that they would discontinue the wine from 2010, as it didn't sell sufficiently (they would pick earlier to go in the standard dry riesling), but the 2009 is so clean and pure - pristine fruit.

See you Thursday.

Allan

BTW, what is the address for Pinochios? I need to know what to tell the taxi driver. I'll be on North Terrace.

Gavin here.

I don't have a lot of older Riesling (something I am working on)

but can bring

* 2009 Grosset Polish Hill Riesling
or
* for diversity, German Riesling, perhaps from Fritz Haag ... preferences?

Shiraz, loads, speak up all comers, should I bring

* 2001 E&E Black Pepper Shiraz

or

* 2002 Kalleske Greenock Shiraz ... their first ever Shiraz, before they became famous

or

* 2000 or 2001 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro

Advice and preferences welcome .. Allan??

.

My preference would be for the E&E Black Pepper Shiraz, not having tried it before. If we are too shiraz heavy, I can replace one of my shiraz with a Grosset Riesling or maybe a Pikes Reserve Riesling.

Yep - still in. Boarding passes done, and 6 bottles of wine packed into styrofoam packs for the trip. Not a lot of room left in the suitcase for clothes and yes, I must remember this is a work trip!

Gavin - a Wendouree would be marvellous if you think it is remotely ready to drink. I think it would be a great counterpoint to Barossa reds, and the Great Southerns I have packed are possibly of a less robust style than the Barossans - would love to compare with a Clare. My older reds (and the older rieslings, for that matter) are all 2001s.

Looking forward to meeting you all tomorrow night.

Cheers

In order to balance out the contest, I will swap my Capel Vale Kinnaird for a 2006 Grosset Polish Hill. Unfortunately The Tunnels is closed until next week so I can't liberate anything older.

It's cabernet day, so I'm taking something cabernet-ish. No idea what that will be just yet, though.

Also something white and probably foreign. But I can't be sure, either.

Confirmed: 1997 Wynn's John Riddoch cabernet, and a 2009 Ocean Eight chardonnay.

I have a few 2011 rieslings but it looks like we're going to be overwhelmed by wine as it is!

Fantastic!

I must admit to being a bit daunted by the sheer quantity of wine that is going to be sampled!
