TN: Christa Rolf Shiraz Grenache 2002

Post by Wizz »

More closed and dusty, blackberry again and some spicy nuttiness on the nose. A mouth warming palate of blackberry an blueberry with a tingle of alcohol. Slightly chalky fine tannin, warming finish. Very good, another pleasant everyday drinking wine, also good if below $20.

cheers

Thier 2001 was a better wine. The best wine fr Veritas '01 bar the Hanish which I havent tasted.

Martin, I have to point out how silly that sounds: you state one wine is better than another, when you havent even tasted it?

I have tasted it in a group, and while its very good, it didnt get universal praise.

Notes to come soon.

Horse manure. What about the following:-
Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot
Bulls Blood
The Election
JJ Hahn x 2
Heysen
Hanisch

Have a look at Chapter 7 of the last SA Tour Diary for the TN's.

Ric,

To my personal taste the Chriata Rolf Shiraz/Grn 2001 were better than these:
Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot '01(marginally, excellent but not typical)
Bulls Blood'01(too much red fruited, moreno cherries etc.)
JJ Hahn x 2 '01(down performed the stellar 2001 vintage)
Heysen'01(a step down fr their 2000-declassified Hanish)

The Election(An outsatnding wine but fr the Magpie Est.)
Hanisch(havent tasted)

I like the Christa Rolf 2001's rustic characteristic. ample bodyweight, fantastic structure and most important the QPR factor. One of the best Shz/Grn blend I had out of Australia. During Rolf winemaker dinner 2 yrs ago, an European who sat next to me said it's better than some expensive CdP.

Martin,

To my personal taste the Chriata Rolf Shiraz/Grn 2001 were better than these:

Bulls Blood'01(too much red fruited, moreno cherries etc.)

So why does that make it a lesser wine?

JJ Hahn x 2 '01(down performed the stellar 2001 vintage)

But just beaus, in your opinion, these two were not as good as they should have been for the vintage conditions, doesn't mean that they are not better than the Christina.

Heysen'01(a step down fr their 2000-declassified Hanish)

Once again, the logic doesn't hold because even assuming the 01 Heysen was not as good as the 00 ( which I would dispute) it doesn't mean the Christina was better.

The Election(An outsatnding wine but fr the Magpie Est.)

Binder is a partner in this label and makes the wine, so its essentially from him.

Hanisch(havent tasted)

I like the Christa Rolf 2001's rustic characteristic. ample bodyweight, fantastic structure and most important the QPR factor. One of the best Shz/Grn blend I had out of Australia. During Rolf winemaker dinner 2 yrs ago, an European who sat next to me said it's better than some expensive CdP.[/quote]

QPR is important but QPR and quality have nothing to do with each other, now do they? Just because a wine has great qpr doesn't make it a great wine.

As for the European who sat next to you at the dinner and passed comment, so what. it is just a nameless persons opinion and we have no idea if he has a good palate or not. Its here-say.
Cheers

When did it turn into Open Season on Martin Week?

He's only posting his opinions. And I know you're all ONLY posting yours, I've just noticed a general vibe that seems a little...unneccessary?

Though the man does have a hard on for 98 Grange that my wallet is totally frustrated by, not that that's his fault.

Keep on posting Martin, I appreciate your views (to the extent that I aspire to afford the wine you drink).

Dave,

Martin made a very big call on these wines and in the first post I questioned the basis for that call.

When he responded, the answer seemed to lack substance, and more importantly, solid logic and that why I responded with my further thoughts. I am not having a go at him as a person, I have questioning his call on a range of wines, please let me repeat, its nothing personal. For the record, I have probally tasted more of the Veritas wines (in complete line ups) than most people so feel I have a pretty good handle on the range.

Though the man does have a hard on for 98 Grange that my wallet is totally frustrated by, not that that's his fault.

Sorry, I don't understand what this has to do with the Veritas question we are discussing here.

Keep on posting Martin, I appreciate your views (to the extent that I aspire to afford the wine you drink).

Agreed, and Martin is big enough to do exactly that and we have disagreed before and still still debate without hard feelings.

I guess it looks a bit that way. Martin apologies, I should have PM'd about the 01 Hanisch.

I agree with Ric - Martin puts some pretty brave opinions out. Thats fine, but these will attract attention. Hence this thread!

cheers (and don't be put off by all us aggressive bullies Martin :-) )

Andrew

PS: Isn't it great? if tasting notes get posted, discussion is had, the forum becomes a vibrant, interesting place! I love it!

Couldn't agree more about two points.

The Tasting Notes, especially when posted individually, makes comments easy and welcome. Does make the board more vibrant and interesting. Indeed, not even full notes are required, if you go to an interesting tasting or cellar door, post thoughts, ideas sentences etc, a la the thread on Chain of Ponds, or Grant's SA trips.

Also agree with part two, debate is great, attacks are not. I also noted a slightly aggressive (right word?) note towards Martin, which I've also noted in the past towards TORB at times, these are unfortunate and discourage people's opionions.

Let's discuss the wines, even the opinions, not the person (alities).

Back to wine!!
regards

Gavin Trott
