Wine Question
Wine Question
We were demolishing an old house the other day and found some of this stuff under the floor.
There were quite a few other wine bottles that were broken due to the work going on. We tried a few a few swigs out of a few bottles but I'm not too sure if it was bad or not. Just concerned that stale wine might not be safe to drink in case the little lady wants some.
There might be some airline wine too. The labels are filthy but say 707.
Are they safe to drink is really what my wife wants to know.

I thought it might have been an airline bottle because I remember the old 707s that flew over my house. This plonk is just a bonus if you could call it that. We bought the deceased estate to clear. If the wines are drinkable, I'll give it to the missus. Shouldn't have to buy fresh ones for a while.
Thanks for your help.

Just thought I'd update the connosuers here. This morning we found more wine bottles under this house that we're pulling down. I've even seen some Aussie stuff that I can identify with and that a crate of Wolf Blass that looks oldish. Also some champers that looks to be fully imported and some other red stuff but the bottles are really badly corroded.
The missus started marninating some meat in the Penfolds this morning and says it smells okay. Hopefully the champers still has some fizz left in it.
Cheers Nev

I really don't know about all this. I find lots of stuff under houses that I demolish all the time. Get a lot of coinage and generally it isn't worth a crock. I've found cutlery, money, wood, books, but mainly junk. I don't see how anyone would find this stuff a treasure trove. All the labels on the bottles are up sh1**ers ditch. The Penfold Claret is okay, even the Wolf Blass 76 and 79ers are okay. But its like a can of food without a label if you ask me. Some of these bottles have lead caps. My missus is gonna try and scrape some of the crud off these imported bottles. It's a waste of time anyway. I'm a beer drinker and the missus drinks cask wine. She says its a least as good as that but surely old wine like that can't be good for you. Even the cask wine boxes say use by XXXXXXX

Hey Mate,
When you get to the bottles with irrelevant names like "romanee" and "Chateau" something, don't take any notice of them, they're meaningless. Just pm me , let me know where you live and I'll come around and save you having to take them to the tip. I'm like to guy from Pulp Fiction, I just make these problems go away.
You wouldn't believe it though, and I swear I'm telling the truth, I woke up this morning with two russian hookers either side of me in the bed. Couldn't understand a word they were saying. Can anyone tell me how much they are worth?
Cheers

About ten Roubles and a large dose of everything nasty. Good luck, hope the antibiotics work.
Mike.
PS - Happy New Year.
Finished digging out all the wine bottles and I believe you guys will consider some of this a bit of a tragedy. Cleaned off some broken bottles and I think three of them would have been Grange Hermitage and even I know that would make you guys cry. Fair bit of broken glass in there and that makes me wonder why a bloke would spend what seems like a fortune on what must have once been good booze and then just dump it under the house. I think there was a lot of subsidence in the house but it's still weird. Six of the bottles in the dirt appeared to have been in wooden boxes but they were rotted right through. The labels are in really bad nick but appear to have large letters the last two look like VS. Ther could be a few more under that but the missus is flat out with other stuff at the moment.

When I first saw this post I was trying to work out if it was January 1st or April 1st that was approaching. Given that some forumites have looked at this as genuine, I should treat it with the same respect & pass on a couple of comments.
Keep in mind these wines that are being unearthed are quite old wines, so even if they are in good condition they will be quite different to the equivalent current vintages from your local booze outlet. They were probably made in a different style to the current batch of fruit bombs too - if you want a rough idea of what they could be like check out the free Rewards of Patience 5 available on the Penfolds website.
As far as keeping it under the house goes, if the wines have been preserved this long there's method in the guy's apparent madness. As long as they haven't been exposed for an extended time during the demolition, the wines could be in very good shape. I heard last week of a 1996 Grange that was taken to a wine clinic last year that was ullaging badly due to being kept under a bed - compared to that this guy was a genius.
Again while the label damage is regrettable it's a good sign they've been down there a long time - it's a pity the wines and boxes weren't elevated off the dirt and there wasn't any moth balls/insect repellant to minimise the damage. Keep that in mind when buying at action folks - damaged labels while being sometimes significantly cheaper could be a sign that someone has actually tried to cellar the bottles properly, and if you're actually buying the wine to drink that's a bonus.
Cheers

Forget about goodness and mercy, they're gone.
I guess I'm just curious to find out just a bit more about this stuff. I'm getting more interested than my missus. I'm not here to sell the wine. My missus is just using it for cooking. It's not that old, around thirty years and the labels are largely useless. Hopefully the doll we found is more valuable.
