Carl, I opened a 97 JR last week. Opened, poured into decanter at 6PM, served at 9PM...fantastic.
For purposes of the offline, you are right, opportunity to check for taint, I would open, double decant and back into bottle 1-2 hours before the dinner.

I just wanted to confirm my 2008 Elderton Command Shiraz.
I was fussing around in the cellar and i decided i'd better check that i indeed have a 2008 command.
This is in fact the Carlton Football club 150 years anniversary instalment of this wine
but I couldn't see any reference to it being a command Shiraz.
Subsequently I contacted the winery and they have 100% confirmed that it is indeed a 2008 command....
wrapped in glorious navy blue! :wink:

I initially thought it would be good to join the '88 and '98 ranks but i think a couple of 2008 wines will a good
counter measure to some of the older wines. I did think of bringing the 08 noon but it sounds like we've got
plenty of good stuff on the menu already and assuming Jason is coming than we really will be spoilt for choice.

I'm hoping there's a metaphor at play here. This bottle is coming out of the cellar and it's glory and power will be released.

Have you locked in what wine you are bringing?

There are ao many great wines on the Langtons list it can be hard to decide.

With those numbers you might want to look at how the UK Wine Pages run their offlines. Basically they break everyone up into tables of no more than 8/9 with those people's wines on their table. That way you get a decent look at the wines rather than a tumble full. At the end of the night people swap whats left if any with other tables.

I agree with Mark's comment. I prefer to taste at least 100ml of a wine even if it means tasting less wines overall.

The last time I saw George he seemed to be very keen on the 1998 Mt Langi Shiraz, so that's my flagged wine. I will have the 1998 Dead Arm (then again maybe something completely different) as a backup.

The only label i see being messed with the is the Elderton Command Carlton blues label.
Particularly if they get up over the mighty crows the week before... :wink:

That would be like cutting off your nose to spite your face given Victoria makes the best shiraz in Aus. Cab SAv is more open to discussion but the prize probably goes to MR.

the last time an offline similar to the one planned played out i know the 1996 Seppelt Great Western Shiraz was the WOTN for a few of us including myself.

It was up against the below SA stalwarts

1986 Penfolds Magill Estate
1986 Penfolds Grange
2006 Penfolds RWT
1996 Charles Melton Nine Popes
1996 Wendouree Cab/Malbec
2006 Katnook Cabernet
2006 Kalleske Johan Georg Shiraz
1996 Rockford SVS Moorooroo Shiraz

All jokes aside, that would be my preference too. The 98 Seppelts St Peters is probably one of my all time favourite Aussie shiraz along with a Castagna and some Clonakilla.

Ahh, Castagna, what a wonderful wine. Syrah is what they call it if I remember from a Sydney wine show many years ago.

If you are ever going through Beechworth, Julian the winemaker and owner of Castagna is one of the most hospitable hosts I have ever met at a winery. One needs to phone ahead for a visit but once there Julian takes you through the winery and opens endless bottles to shares. In the end I was so embarrassed I purchased all the open bottles and left him an old Barbaresco.

Nice one Mark. I will definitely keep that in mind if ever I am there. I met Julian and his son at a Sydney wine show many years ago and tasted a range of their wines, including a bushfire affected vintage that was there for educational purposes. I wish I had my notes so that I could recall what all I tasted. Was 2007 a year when there was a major bushfire in or near Beechworth?

Not sure about 2007 but apparently their 2011 was a total write-off. Julian was going to bin the entire crop until his son talked him into making a very drinkable vermouth. We used it to make Negronis for the next year or so. :)

I had the 08 RR Shiraz at CD a couple of years ago. I hope it has tamed down a little, tbh I found it almost undrinkable, too alcoholic, massive wine. Ol' Whitey loves 'em though.

With the JR, I would decant a few hours before, wash the bottle, return the wine and lightly recork. If I was drinking it with only a few others, I would probably just decant on the night and savour the changes in the glass with time.

Wish I had an excuse to be in Adl that weekend, hang on, the off-line would be an excuse!! :D :D Will be there this Easter weekend, couple of winemaking things to do, press our Maralinga Wine Society McLV grenache and maybe the brother's AH shiraz, both going through ferment atm.

I have opened a couple of the 98 over the past couple of years. Depending on how it’s been cellared it should just be starting to develop its secondary flavours.

I would suggest standing it upright the day before to allow the wine to settle and come up to room temperature. I would pull the cork the morning of the tasting and check it’s ok. I would then leave it somewhere dark and not too warm and allow it to open up in the bottle. Don’t decant at home. At the tasting test it when you arrive. It should have started to open up by the evening. It’s a big wine so you can decant it at the restaurant without too much concern if it still seems closed. Enjoy. I look forward to reading how it goes.
