Langtons 6th Classification Tasting Adelaide May 1st, 2014

Post by phillisc »

Dear all, spotted this in the paper here a couple of weeks ago so got a couple of tickets.
Email from Langtons today spruiking that it will sell out in hours...may do in the eastern states but this is conservative little old Adelaide...still plenty of tickets at the moment...perhaps the $120 has put them off.

Anyway bout bloody time it was held here, since more than half of the wines come from SA and I can't recall a tasting here before.

Heartened by Dave Vino, Cam and others reports that they are a pretty good event...I am planning a swim through and will be easy to spot in my wet suit :D :D

Apologies for the continual missing of Adelaide offlines, but it would be great if I could catch up with a few of the Adelaide mob in May.

5:30-8:30, hope we don't get chucked out then....may have to make off with a Wendouree and sit in the toilet for a while ha ha
National wine centre, Hackney Rd. Adelaide.

See you there

Cheers
Craig.

Can anyone provide a bit more information about these events. Eg:
- how many tickets in total are available,
- which wines will be available for tasting
- whether any guarantee is given that you will get to taste all the wines - or are tastings only provided until stock run out

They are superb events. Buy a ticket now people! You shouldn't miss this if you like Aussie wine.

Assuming it's the same as the Sydney one (assuming!)

- how many tickets in total are available - Lots, but it's in a BIG venue (well Sydney was, not sure about ADL).

- which wines will be available for tasting - A huge number, pretty much all of the 4 Langtons Classification levels, plus more, inc all the really good stuff (I had HOG, Art Series Chard, Bass Philip Premium, Grange, Polish Hill, RRoad, BPress, Astralis, Giaconda Chard, Graveyard and tons of other top end wines)

- whether any guarantee is given that you will get to taste all the wines - or are tastings only provided until stock run out - All wines of all levels were on tasting all night, maybe a couple of exceptions much later in the evening, but not many. I think when they ran out of Grange 2008 allocation, they were pouring the 2007.

Link to thread on the Sydney event (scroll to top)... http://forum.auswine.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13412&p=109289&hilit=langtons+classification#p109289

Thanks for the info Tim

Tricky

Just rang ticketek...useless
Just rang the wine centre...will be in the Hickambotham room ground floor..maximum of 500 guests...shit that will be a swim through...better add snorkel and flippers.

Hopefully Langtons cap the numbers at 10-20% less than that.
Big outdoor coutyard area to grab some air adjacent to the room.

Still many tickets left....get one and wear your Auswine badge! (Gavin do you stock such an item?)

Just read the post from September 2013 on the Vic and NSW tastings, hope it is like Sydney and not like Melbourne.

Cheers
craig.

 love the idea Craig! Perhaps what we need is a secret handshake so you can subtely identify fellow obsessive wine tragics without openly admitting that you have a problem......

Touche Sam, hope Gav, Ian, Mark x 2, George K, Crusty and a few eastern staters if they come over make the tasting.

I might make up an Auswine hat....copyright permissions granted and IP considerations noted Gav....true there will be SOMEONE I know in attendance.
Stocking up on panadol and berroca as we speak

Cheers Craig.

PS. Just noted on my tickets numbers 449 and 450. Don't know if that means its nearly sold out or the wine centre is planning to breach OH&S regs by exceeding room capacity. Perhaps cause its tin pot Adelaide it will be in the outside courtyard as well.

I may have made some reasonably negative comments on the forum regarding the Melbourne tasting last year...it was certainly very overcrowded. However, to be fair, I got a lovely follow up from Langtons, and I certainly think they learnt from the experience. I would think they are pretty well versed with organising these tastings now, and I'd say: if you can get a ticket, then do so. Just don't attempt to try all the wines...

Wow, sounds like a great event. If I wasn't flying to tokyo that day could even have been a good excuse for my first visit to Adelaide!

I figure about 6 glasses of any of the top tier is break even point.
Got a couple of tickets this afternoon - now just got to clean out my Stadium Pal.

The one in Sydney a few years ago was pretty crowded..the Sydney one last year was really nice though..a LOT more room and the food a bit out of the way made for a really relaxing environment...easy to get around...easy to get access to the tables, etc.. It was by far the nicest tasting event I've been too..not just because of the wine but even though there were a lot of people, there was more than enough room to easily make your way around the tables...

As far as trying all of them...If you're spitting you'll get through more than you would if you don't. I think last time I got through almost all of them...but it also means you can't spend too much time at any one place...enough for a little bit of a chat, some questions if I have any...

A lot of forumites were at the Sydney one...made for a great time..

Mmm... Langtons are really testing the market re pricing, Sydney tickets were $95 each, so they have raised them by $25 for Adelaide. Sure to be a great night though!

Just one more question for those who have been before, is the set up in alphabetical order, by state or completely random.
Trying to make sense of it all and have some sort of plan of attack

You won;t really know until you get there I suspect. But there's not so many producers, so little time and wine running out that you need to panic. Have a list of wines you really want to try, get there, suss it out while trying a few along the way.

No details yet, AFAIK. I'm, sure it'll be posted here as soon as it's announced!

Yes, and I think $40 in Sydney the year before. Now that first event was a fantastic night. Awesome tasting event that had us all stunned how good the range of wines was, followed by 7 mates squashed in the M3, Golden Century hilarity and Birth of the Grape Mates Keyring.

I heard from Langtons today that the Perth tasting will be at Crown in June. Despite cost (everything is dear in Perth) I will be keen to attend.

Was it actually mentioned here what they were doing in Sydney?? Released a week or two ago. Not impressed, a cynical build-it-up and screw-em-for money scenario that reeks of corporate greed IMHO.

EDIT : Hang on not just Sydney of course, now I'm confused... what about the $120 mentioned elsewhere in this thread?? Early release, subsequently changed??

**Experience Classification VI at the tasting event of the year***

The first Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine was launched 25 years ago in 1989 and featured 34 wines: the 34 most traded through Langton’s Wine Auctions. Classifications II, III and IV followed and each issue reflected the growing maturity of the secondary wine market in Australia. By 2010 when Classification V was released, it had evolved to include 123 wines and the Langton’s Classification enjoyed worldwide notoriety as the ultimate reference point for the very finest in Australian wine.

So it is with a keen sense of history and occasion that we are pleased to announce that the evolution continues; Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine VI will be unveiled this year on 1st May at Australia’s premier culinary event, Tasting Australia in Adelaide. We don’t want to spoil the surprise but it’s our biggest yet with some exciting changes and additions. To further celebrate the launch, we will be embarking on a national tour, bringing the wines and the winemakers of Classification VI to Brisbane(14th May), Sydney( 15th May), Melbourne(16th May) and Perth(25th June) with a series of tasting events. This year we are offering two different ticket packages for each event;

The Ultimate Classification Experience & The Classic Classification Experience

The Ultimate Classification Experience
This year, the pinnacle of the Classification, the ‘Exceptional’ wines, will feature in their own exclusive tasting room and your Ultimate Classification ticket will gain you admission. These are the most highly sought-after wines on the market today; the ‘First Growths’ of Australian wine, including the iconic wines from Penfolds, Henschke, Chris Ringland, Moss Wood and Rockford just to name a few. In addition to the Exceptional tasting room, your Ultimate Classification ticket also gives you access to over 100 wines on tasting that make up the balance of the Classification. Ticket price: $250 per person.

The Classic Classification Experience
Your Classic Classification ticket will give you the opportunity to taste over 100 wines that make up the remaining categories and feature the ‘Second Growths’ and ‘Third Growths’ of Australian wine. These are all high performing wines of exquisite quality with a solid to very strong market following and include wines from producers like Bass Phillip, Bannockburn, Grosset, Lake’s Folly, Wolf Blass and many more.Ticket price: $85 per person.

Felt like a sucked in idiot, but still bought a ticket to the $85 event, as there are plenty of producers I never got to at previous events.

So $40 for the first one, all wines inc HOG, Grange etc on tasting. $99 for the second one, better space, bit of food, all wines inc HOG, Grange on tasting.

Then $250 for the third one if you want to taste the so-called 'Exceptional' stuff. Ah well, quite possibly it was the like of Penfolds, Henschke, Ringland etc that wanted extra fees for offering their top wines.

Cheers

Tim, the Adelaide event is not being run by Langtons...its being run by tasting Australia.
Apparently there is a corporate ( read freeloader snouts in the trough stuff) tasting prior to us wee public turning up who parted with the hard earned.
I was assured that i would be drinking from a Riedel and that ALL wines would be available....NO exceptions.

Just wondering who I have to speak to to get an invite to the corporate function...if nothing else hope they are kicked out before I turn up at 5pm...nothing worse than a freeloader drunk corporate.

Apparently 300 tickets sold with an option for 50 more...something tells me that they will go too.

Cheers Craig.

ps. if there are any of the Adelaide mob going would love to catch up for a drink and a bite afterwards, I am already a plus one.
The theme of course would be something from the classification, maybe a particular vintage??
I am no good with the restaurant stuff but Ian or someone might know of a place take takes a few rowdy type from 9pm on.
Tomorrow will be a good day

Just bought a ticket for the Melbourne event - it's my first Langton's tasting.

Bit of a shame they've excluded the Exceptional-rated wines though.

They didn't exclude them..you just have to pay a lot more for them...

250 for Exceptional + everything else.
85 for everything else

Like TiggerK I'm just doing the everything else one...

They've been great events though...The 2nd one was done very well...

Diddy per my previous post above, suspect when the "corporates" have their tasting at 12ish, before we mere members of the public at 5:30 on May 1, the announcement will be made.

Or that the night before, that great behemoth aka twitter will leak it....deliberately...opps how did that happen...perhaps L P-B will be flown out

I am still hopeful that I won't be required to don a wetsuit, but will wear an Auswine hat or tie with pride.

Cheers Craig

ps. does anyone here know how to get a gig into the "corporates' knees up? 6 hours of Classification 6 might just see me through!
