I received 2 magnums of 1999 Classic Clare Shiraz as a bonus with a mixed case of Bin 56 and Bin 61 about this time last year. The 1 magnum I opened (last year) was horribly corked, but could also have been brett affected. Leasingham (kindly/obligatedly - if that's a word) replaced it with 2 bottles...

Yeah I think I am better off down here. My in-laws also live in Townsville but are at the Commonwealth games. It took my brother-in-law over 3 hrs to clean up their backyard. I can't believe that I actually miss Townsville bottle shops. The range in Maryborough is pretty ordinary and most of the bot...

Also following the cyclone with interest. Currently living away from my Townsville home for 6 months in Maryborough (QLD) during my wife's 6 month rural term for her GP training. Have to rely on my brother-in-law to secure the house. The latest advice (8PM) is that Larry is intensifying but is expec...

2001 Yalumba Signature - simple, muted, thin, short. Dissapointing. Upon reflection I suspect low level cork taint. Normally I can pick TCA upon opening but couldn't tell with this bottle. It was still drunk by the pissheads at the table despite them saying it was ordinary. More 2002 Seppelt Origin...

No good at tasting notes, so brief impressions: Seppelt Original Sparkling Shiraz 2002 - Thought it was dry and savoury initially but did seem a bit sweeter when retasting after the Elderton. This is the perfect drink for the Townsville summer coming up (if the airconditioning fails). Must get more....

Saw an episode of Frasier on the plane the other day. Niles, under the misapprehension that he was stoned, said that he was so "ripped" he was contemplating some outrageous food and wine combinations. He was thinking of matching a delicate Chilean bass with an agressive zinfandel. Nothing wrong with...

Good topic Mark. Only an overnight trip? I am off to Cardwell for a couple of days after XMas with my caravaning enthusiast in-laws. Expecting hot to very hot weather. Agree that some sparkling reds will be in order. Earlier this year, went camping over Easter to Ravenswood - gold mining town an hou...

Last night went out to dinner for my father-in-laws birthday. I had an excellent twice cooked duck on sweet potato mash with a red wine sauce. Matched with a 1982 Koonunga Hill that was still very drinkable. The cork just crumbled into the bottle but the waiter decanted into a carafe through a fine ...

Mike, Did you look at the full results. Jim Barry Lodge Hill Shiraz came in last in the Shiraz tasting , narrowly beaten by 2001 Howard Park Scotsdale Shiraz. The Scotsdale Cabernet was last in the Cabernet tasting. Too much tannin and acid (not enough sugar!). Just had a look at the Red Blends sect...

Graham, I had the Neagles Rock Grenache Shiraz a couple of weeks ago. Very nice. The bottle was gone in no time. It was hastily opened when my father-in-law dropped in and I think it would be even better with some time in the decanter. Still have one bottle left. I have only recently discovered gren...

On-line ordering etiquette and low prices
I was wondering what the etiquette is with on-line ordering (wine or otherwise) where there is a price advertised which is so low that it probably is an error. Do you: a) contact the retailer first to confirm the price b) order and hope that you get it for the advertised price but willing to cancel ...

Thanks Mark. I had one a few weeks ago and wasn't sure whether it was oxidised, heat affected or needed further breathing (which did improve it slightly but not much). But your note sounds exactly as if you were there with me drinking the same bottle. Not impressed at all. My wife said I got ripped ...
