Re: cost of imported wine, another quick rant.

It's very easy to bring wine in for personal consumption at a lower price than retail, obviously -- you're cutting out the importer, distributor, retailer. That's the same for a lot of products. But try making a business out of it and deal with the courier losses, breakages, thefts, the items that j...

Re: Wine shops in Beaune, France

Hard to say. Philippe is professional but doesn't give much away; Frederic likes to be contrary. I always suck up to his wife. I reckon there are some goodies to be had at Le Tonton and Caves Madeleine too. Ask if it's not on the list or in view.

Re: Wine shops in Beaune, France

With some of the guys mentioned above, they are on the lookout for foreigners, sometimes to take advantage of, sometimes to frustrate. Philippe is the owner at Mon Millesime. He has a regular stash of old cellars (deceased estates) coming in and the pricing reflects market value. It's worth poking a...

Re: List Your Best Wines of 2013

I don't seem to have the memory I used to. Probably been spoiled by my generous wine-drinking buddies. Had some memorable wines at a dinner we organised at Tetsuya's to crack a group purchase 1993 Henri Jayer Vosne Romanee 1er cru Cros Parentoux . It lived up to the hype: sublime. At the same night ...

Has anyone tried the 2004 Dom Pérignon? Looking at opening up a few bottles for NYE and thought I'd get some feedback here first? I've tried three bottles and really wasn't impressed with any. Some wine-swilling friends, who appreciate good bottles I open but are happy drinking $10 stuff, were q...

Re: Buying old champagne

If you're going to Champagne there are still a couple of retailers selling older bottles from less high profile estates that are worth a shot. Most of the retailers will tell you whether the wines are worth drinking or just nice display objects. I've bought 1979 Palmer for about $125 for a mate and ...

Sam. Infloresence is his entry level wine, but I find that they're all good, but very different. He uses some of the rarer (allowed) grape varieties in Champagne. Mike Actually Inflorescence are the vineyards owned by his father, and as of 2014 they will pass to Cedric's ownership and change to Ros...

Nice champagne. This may be zero dosage IIRC, but given the riper vintage, doesn't need much anyway. I'm a big fan of Bouchards... and they drink well young

Always zero dosage, single varietal, single vintage, single vineyard, no oak.

The bottles must also show lot numbers somewhere -- on the label, capsule, even on the glass, and this should be repeated on the invoice. If you're doing this sort of thing, I think it's worth it to pay extra for refrigerated trucking in France too. Didn't know about the 100-litre limit, but then I ...

Re: Suggest some 2008 wines for medium to long term cellarin

German riesling is always an inexpensive good bet for cellaring, and the 08s from good producers (kabinett and spatlese for under $50) should go 20-30 years easy enough.

20g is too dry for me! Yes, so picked at spatlese level and fermented to off-dry/feinherb level. The magic formula for these is about 3g of r/s to 1g of acidity. The Germans are trying to be more understandable with their labels these days. They are actually not putting kabinett trocken or spatlese ...

Re: Preferred pre-dinner drink

You're on the money, Wizz. A clean auslese (so no botrytis), especially with age, is an awesome aperitif. I have a bottle or two of this when I go to an old friend's place in NZ -- with hors d'oeuvres -- and the low alcohol but high flavour is a great way to start. But I also love champagne.

Open another bottle for a start. If it's no good, show it to someone else to get their opinion on what might be wrong. I had two bottles of wine recently that people might have just presumed to have been very ordinary, but because I knew the wines and knew those bottles were not representative, I op...

Eurocentric Burgundy dinners, Melb June 15 and 17

Hi guys, Just a quick heads up that you can now book for dinners in Melbourne, with 12 wines (at least) to be opened each night. Probably 10-14 people each night, but fairly flexible if people get in quick. June 15, Estivo, Kew, $95 June 17, Verge, CBD, $130 Not quite covering costs but it's an oppo...

Not sure it's quite that clearcut. A mate of mine bought two dozen 1975 or 1976 Lynch Bages 375mls and most of them were gorgeous. Not sure 750mls would go another 35 years and magnums another 105 years!
