Suggest some 2008 wines for medium to long term cellaring

Hi all,

After some thoughts on wines from the 2008 vintage that will be good for some medium to long term cellaring. Suggestions for wines under the $50 mark are what I'm really after. I'm thinking definitely some Margaret River Cabernets. Any thoughts on which are some of the better ones that fit the bill. Also perhaps some Chardonnay?

Any other thoughts/suggestions etc will be greatly appreciated.

I bought some wines in Lyon a few years back, and chatting to the sller bloke, I asked about 2005.

He said that there was a belief that if a Frenchman made bad wine in 2005, he should give up.

I get the feeling, from tasting and reading, that Margaret River 2008 may be a similar proposition.

From my point of view so far, Plantagenet, and Blue Poles are superb - at all price points. And the Voyager Estate chardonnay is a blinder. But I bet there are tons of gems to come....

German riesling is always an inexpensive good bet for cellaring, and the 08s from good producers (kabinett and spatlese for under $50) should go 20-30 years easy enough.

He's obviously never been to Champagne. Some very ordinary stuff amongst the better ones....

But speaking of 2008, it should be a fantastic year for cellar-able Champagne

Echo Tom's comments re the d'Arenberg Dead Arm. Outstanding stuff, I have some 07 (not 08) but it clearly has the potential to be cellared for manys years if I could stay away from it for that long.

I had a Laughing Jacks Greenock Shiraz on the weekend, I reckon it will hold for a while.

I had the Jacobs Creek Centenary Hill Shiraz 2008 a couple of weeks ago, and I think that's pretty nice.
Will last a few years, I reckon.
The Elderton Command 2008 is a bit pricier, but it's super high-toned, as is typical, I think for that label, and that was right up there, too.
Bot of these are probably very pre-release, but they're both good.

Couldn't go far wrong with 08's from MR. For good $40 wines I'd stick to the 2nd label of the better Wilyabrup producers. Not the super exlusive fruit etc but still off the older vines (by MR standards) & in the better locations - Woodlands Margaret, Hay Shed Hill block 2/standard cabernet, Cullens Cab Merlot, vasse felix cabernet, Ashbrook etc.

Also maybe go through peoples opinions on the coonawarra roadshow recently.

Great Southern Shiraz in 2008 is worth a serious look as well. Capel Vale and Plantagenet are the most likely candidates
