Given the number times these wines (and others like them) appear in the auction lists it seems that there are quite a few people out there who think it perfectly reasonable. I guess the other side of the coin is that is it equally "despicable and not in the interests of the wine industry" ...

Odds and sods: 2005 Seppelt Sparkling Shiraz: Disappointing. Red cherry fruit, a little lolly-sweet, lacks intensity. I had one of these a few days back too. Agree with your assessment - perhaps adding level of Brett that I found distracting. I might go so far as to say that I found that particular...

Re: Wine fridges

Cindy, I too have a Dome 24bottle fridge. Mine was given to me as a gift - although not a wedding gift. When it was given to me I already had off site professional storage and I remember thinking at the time that, while it was a very nice gesture, that what with my storage facility being relatively ...

Tasted earlier this week at a venue not really suitable for taking notes 1995 Penfolds St Henri Humming along, rich, complex, heaps of life left in it will continue to improve for some time to come. 1999 Wynns Coonawarra Shiraz. Slightly disappointing, nothing wrong with the wine, it just didn't liv...

French send wine by sailboat

Oddly enough two of my passions merge in this story I found on a sailing forum.

French send wine by sailboat

French vineyard owners are returning to a slower pace of life by starting to export their wine by sailing boat - a method last used in the 1800s - to reduce their carbon footprint.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'll start hunting around and see what I can find. I fear that for the most part I will end up with newer vintages - simply from the standpoint of time and availability. While our tasting group format (for the moment) is stuck at 6 wines, the most common way to ...

Your representative sample of Oz Riesling

I have been roped in to organise a small tasting of Australian Rieslings for a group of friends. The idea is to get a range - probably about 6 different wines that express (as much as that is possible with only half a dozen wines) a sample of the breadth of styles, characters, etc of the variety as ...

Ryan, I could not bring anything of the calibre of a Grange or even near. For I fear it was out of my price range even before the mortgage made a hit on my wine budget. I would however love to experience wines of that calibre, even if it ends up being just the once. If you are generous enough to all...

Equipment failure happens and I know that no-one can guarantee 100% that temps will always stay within the preferred bounds.. that said.. you hope they have the systems in place to monitor the situation and deal with issues as and when they arise. Looking at the graph, it looks like their cooling system failed some time before boxing day and temps slowly rose over the following week. The kick in RH suggests the time and date the system was fixed. The disparity between RH and T look more like fluid temp rather than air temp. Or is there an ins...

Many years ago I was told a story by a chap whose brother in law owned a milk truck.

Apparently he made all his money transporting grape juice in and out of AOC regions by moonlight.

I use an offsite facility for long term storage and use a small wine fridge for day-to-day consumption of "ready" bottles that I top off from storage on a regular basis. I agree with Alex, energy efficiency is probably most important. While I check the internal temperature on a semi-regula...

You have to remember that chillies are not an endemic part of Thai cuisine. It is most likely that they were introduced into the region by the Portuguese sailors who - if memory served me correctly used them instead of citrus fruits to ward off scurvy. I have a totally unsubstanciated theory that wh...
