Warrenmang Black Puma Shiraz 2001

I just took delivery of 6 bottles of the above wine. I bought it through GraysOnline Auctions as a result of the Heritage debacle and the ensuing liquidation of the stock.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried this vintage? I can find reviews on other vintages but not the '01.

I was sort of looking at this one, but prices went too high. I'm waiting for someone like you to report on this one.

FWIW Jeremy Oliver rated it 16.0/87, drink 2006-2009, no actual TN published on his site.

I believe Ric has done a TN on it as well, liked it more the JO. I am also keen to know what you think of the wine. How about cracking one and letting us know what you think.

Thanks guys,

I am an amateur when it comes to tasting wine - I have enjoyed wine for a few years now and have around 10 dozen bottles sitting in a pseudo cellar (an old mechanic pit in our shed).

Due my lack of experience, I have no confidence in actually describing what I have tasted. I'd love to see what someone more experienced thinks.

Rest assured, I am trying to improve my knowledge (hopefully this forum will help).

Any suggestions for other ways to improve my knowledge would also be gratefully received.

I have also taken the opportunity and bought 6 of the 2001. I have already some 2002 which is very good, but like you could not find a review, except JO and he was obviously not so keen and I do not always agree with him. Anyway, I picked my case up today and decided to have another look on the net. I found this review below. Enjoy!

Warrenmang 2001 Black Puma Shiraz is their top wine and is priced accordingly. The nose is lifted but tight and has good complexity with ripe berry flavours and menthol. The deep, pure, persistent fruit provides an initial sweet hit, going into savoury blackberry and plum whilst maintaining an underlying sweetness which finishes dry with loads of fine grained, powdery tannins. Ample in weight, the structure is solid, layered and tight and the complexity well developed. This is a classy wine that need till the end of the decade to show its best. Rated as Excellent with ** for value.

What other people think doesn't matter squat. What you thinks is what matters.

Here is a hint that I gave to a friend once who was hesitant about starting. Its not about florid language and descriptors you see in places like this ... it is all about your impression.

Start off by trying to come up with one or two words on each of what it looks like, what it smells like and what it tastes like.

Ruby red, Strawberries, Spice is a tasting note just as much as

(Apologies to n4sir for stealing a TN)

Dark to inky purple. Gorgeous fresh nose of black cherry/blackcurrant backed by malty oak with a little black pepper. Tart/slightly jammy entry followed by plummy fruit, earthy nuances and black olive mid-palate, finishing long & grainy with sweet cherry and a touch of nutty oak and liquorice.

because when it boils down to it -- it is still just Colour, Smell, Taste... just with a lot more experience.

Remember.. no one is going to think less of you because you post a three word tasting note.
