Re: TN: Turkey Flat Shiraz 2002

Hah, think last time I logged on this was the hot vintage. Nice to see it shining.

Open it Friday evening, and pour a small glass so it drops to low shoulder level. Whack the, or another, cork back in...the odds are the original will be crumbly, in my experience. Then, you get to see if the bottle is sound, and let this super wine breathe as it needs and deserves to. It's still my...

Had a bunch of the 2005 Woodcutters this past week; eminently gluggable drink now proposition. Bought a case just after lunch, cracked the first at 5:30, half of it gone by 9...I obviously wasn't the only one why liked it. Yummo+. A 2000 Small Creek Shiraz was real typical Barossa, but with a few Wi...

A few notes written Sunday: Some (very) cheapies this week to recalibrate the palate('n'wallet ). http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f184/drjvb/P1130009.jpg Not surprisingly, no stunners or even very good wines, but some pleasant drinking. Interestingly, the character of the varietals was well pronou...

A loaded question to finish off with - has anyone had a truly great McLaren Vale Shiraz with over 10 years bottle age? I've been disappointed almost every time and I'm starting to wonder if even some of the current super-premiums are worth bothering with; again this is straight Shiraz, not Cabernet...

Grant Burge Filsell 2003 Dark Purple , Coffee, Plums, Berrys, and Chary Oak. Good Length and complexity but the oak from the nose seems to protrude through a bit much for my taste. May settle down in a couple of years but I just don't think I like this style much. I bought 3 of these on release, an...

Probably forgetting a few goodies, but pretty ordinary, lean year so far, taking it easy on the wallet, doh Reds: Wynns Black Label 1976 (mmm..ready, but will hold, ripper) , John Riddoch 1994 (it is love!). Chateau Margaux, 1981 (ordinary vintage, stunning wine), Chateau Leoville-Poyferre 1983 (sex...

Under $10, I tend to go for mega-specials, or the less popular varietals, or regions, just to try something new. Try a Petit Verdot, Durif or plain Malbec, for example? While you won't get a great wine, you're more likely to find something interesting than with a Cabernet, Shiraz or Merlot at that p...

I love this wine, and while I think you might have a less than great bottle (syrupy, no...a fair whack of oak, yes, obtrusive, no, etc), the tasting note is great; a reflection of personal taste but also a very fair and subjective note...which is exactly what these notes should be, a bit of both! Wh...

You'll get a good smacking of ripe but not close to over ripe fruit, and lemony french oak. There's already great, great depth of flavour, but complexity is justifiably lacking a little as pretty closed in it's youth. Why not try one now, but with a high-marble steak or something similarly complemen...

This is the vintage on the 'dessert menu' at most restaurants right now, and a result I've had it a few times. I think it's lovely, but there's a slight sourness to the acidity on the finish...which to me makes it a little less enjoyable than the brilliant 2000. Any idea whether that facet will ease...

Just impressions from the last fortnight or so... 1991 Wynns John Riddoch - Quite a bit lighter in colour than recent 1994s. Good structure with very deep seated fruit. A little dumb on the nose, the flavour profile is pure John Riddoch, but this lacks the length, weight and complexity (concentratio...

If it has to be Australian, Meshach is good for 2000, agree on the Duck Muck too, though there's no track record for that long on either. Kieran's on the money with the Cullen, no? How did Wendouree fare at the fold of the millenia? Maurice O'Shea? Georgia's Paddock in a Magnum? :?

My take on this; aged wine certainly can have an air of historical reverence. Imagine the summer sun that bathed the vintage, the economical, political and social climate that bore it. Your birth vintage, or that of a loved one? The perfect way to celebrate or reflect on a life. Sentiment aside, win...

Hollick Cabernet (orange capsule) 2002 This is a pretty impressive effort, is the Ravenswood of same vintage out yet? Tried a few Austrailian Merlots as a follow up to the thread, all forgettable with the exception of the Plantagenet 'Rocky Horror Vineyard' Merlot 2001 which was Very Good/Excellent and should improve over the next 5+ years. Off the top of my head - concentration, depth of colour, depth of flavour, tannin structure, complexity (underlying in a young wine), how fast it 'opens up'/does it get better with airing time, track record, length, oak vs fruit, balance, (how) has it improved/changed since last time, etc :D

Thanks Allan. Sounds like it might be worth a throw, though the 5 year prospect seems a little bit cautious. The '99 is probably a 15-20 year wine. You can quote me on that 8) What do you think, as far as cellaring is concerned, for the 2003?
