Thanks for the response. We've gone with the muscat as we both agreed it is what we enjoy more at the moment. I guess I didn't want to end up comprimising the chance to change over down the track but I missed the obvious point of just buying another one!

Cheers

Once a muscat barrel always a muscat barrel???

Hi, I am just starting out with a 6litre barrel and want to know that if I put muscat in it first time around does that mean it's always got to have muscat in it or can I change it to port sometime down the track if I feel like it? I have read through this post m which is great but it doesn't cover ...

I like it too but it looks a bit expensive and it's basically just a data logger with a nice little web server sort of thing built in.

It would be nice if it had a couple of alarms or output to control something.

Doctoring a split system thermostat

Hi All, I've just had a cellar room built as part of a renovation and whilst it was being built I had the piping installed for a small split system air conditioner. The room has no external walls so using some of the more traditional units wasn't an option. The split system idea is attractive becaus...

Temperature & Humidity Recording & Cellar Control

Hi, I've just built a cellar room and would like to monitor the temperature and humidity in there, plus also use the temperature to control an air conditioner in the room. I'm not sure of the final configuration but the basic idea is that I'd like to mount the temperature and humidity probes in the ...

Well, as someone who has used a standard domestic split unit in a fairly large cellar for over 10 years I have to disagree strongly will just about all your statements except the one about humidity. If you are cellaring for mostly 7-10 years, with some a bit longer then a split domestic unit is qui...

Hey fritz the problem with using standard air con units is they are designed to operate in the 18-24 deg range and the humidity level would not be high enough. If you drain the condensate back into the room where's the excess going to drain to. You need a specific unit designed for the purpose they...

Chris, Sounds like a neat little cellar with plenty of insulation. How long are you intending to cellar your wines? Probably in the 5 to 10 year range My cellar sits around 16-17C in summer with a standard domestic split-unit air conditioner and about 14-15 in winter Do you just use the inbuilt the...

Thanks to all for your comments, they are all appreciated. The bulk of our wines would be consumed in the 7-10 year range. I suspected some form of mechanical air conditioning will be required and I have a max / min thermometer so I will install that. I actually want to set up a PC to data log the m...

Wine Room Under Construction - Would Appreciate Feedback

Hi, We’re in the process of doing a renovation and as part of that we have included a “wine room” for use as a cellar. What I am trying to work out is whether or not I should make some provision for air conditioning down the track. The construction / dimensions are as follows:- â...
