Hi Brucer Clearly camping and drinking good wines are a good birthday mix. I've tasted the Tyrrell's 2000 Vat 1 over the last few years and feel that it's really just into its drinking window. My notes from the last one in Nov 2008 were... Tyrrell's Vat 1 2000 Pale straw with lemon lime and a little...

Tyrrell's 1998 Vat 9 I had one of these in July 2006 so it's probably developed a bit more since. But according to my brief tasting notes it should be ready to drink... Medium to deep red with dark cherry, earth, new leather and a dash of pepper. Medium bodied with good intensity and balance. Into ...

In addition to those already mentioned I would suggest Villa Maria, Vidal and CJ Pask.

They offer very good value for money and are often a match for the more expensive brands.

Wirra Wirra Shiraz 2002 Deep red/purple, rich dark spicey cherry with a little licorice on the nose. Palate reflects the rich dark cherry fruit and spice. Good acid and tannin finish. Needs more time. Leave at least 2 years. 92 Rothvale Lukes Shiraz 2000 Mid to deep red with lovely youngish spicey ...

Attilla Great tasting notes. I tasted the wine a few weeks ago and agree wholeheartedly with your impressions. It is more ready for drinking than a lot of the earlier vintages of Vat 1 but should easily go 10 - 15 years. Like the 2005 it has immediate sex appeal. I tried a 2000 Vat 1 recently and th...

Craig,

One preservative free red that springs to mind is made by Botobolar in Mudgee. They currently have a 2005 preservative free shiraz available.

You can check it out at http://organicwine.com.au/Wines.aspx?NI ... 276&Mode=2

I haven't had any of their wines recently but in the past they have been very drinkable.

Cheers,

Broughy, Hopefully it will improve over time. By the sound of it your cellar may be a little warmer on average than mine resulting in quicker development.

Andrew,

Thanks for your feedback.

Basically it sounds like this wine will definitely improve with more age and/or longer decanting. Will leave my next one for about 2 years before trying again.

Wynns Cabernet Sauvignon 1998

Thought it was time to try one of these to see how it is getting on. Decanted for about an hour before tasting. Medium to deep red with pink edge. Light cherry and ground almond with hints of dried herbs, coffee and tobacco. Mostly cherry and red berry flavours on the palate which is medium bodied a...

1998 St Hallett Blackwell Shiraz

1998 St Hallett Blackwell Shiraz Decanted for about an hour. Deep red with no bricking. Ripe blackberry, cassis and oak on nose. Palate matches nose - rich, full flavoured mostly blackberry. Still mostly primary fuit flavours with a little bit of development showing through. A very nice wine but no...

Paul, the 1971 Grange that I drank in 1986 was by far and away the best wine I have had. You could smell it from across the table - unbelievable! Absolute nectar. My wife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and we savoured every glorious mouthful. We had another bottle exactly 5 years lat...

I'd just like to add my praise to the comments above. I've subscribed since the newsletter began and think that it is great value. I opened a 750ml bottle of this for my daughters 21st a few years ago and it was superb. The nose was amazing. Really intense - I could smell it quite clearly as I poured it into the decanter. Colour was a medium garnet with orange edges and the palate just delicious. A wine at its peak and very mem...

Attila, I have to agree with you on the 2000 O'Shea Shiraz. I've tried it on two separate occasions in the last month and I had a very similar experience to yours. It just doesn't seem to have enough intensity or complexity to warrant the rave reviews I've read in the press. A nice wine sure, but no...

Bring on the Brunellos

My appreciation of Brunello's is very high after a trip to Italy last year. I got to taste a wide range of wines through Tuscany, Umbria and Piedmont. My favourites were the Brunello's (followed closely by the great Sagrantino reds from Montefalco). I was able to taste a range of the 1997 Brunello's...
