Re: The Aussie Fortified Thread…

I have had one, with the type-written label. I'm not 100% sure of provenance, but I found it to be dominated by spirit - of reasonable quality nonetheless.

Waiting until the next vintage for fulfilment might be an option - if he was sold out, it may be that he simply doesn't have the wine to replace? Shame about the lack of communication though.

I note that Bress are currently offering a vertical of 2018, 2020, and 2022 at a reduced price.

Pity about the Quinta do Noval - I had a 1995 a couple of months back that I rated very highly indeed.

Great recommendations above. As a point of difference from the new style of finer-boned Grenache wines, you may also want to try a Greenock Creek Cornerstone. This is the full-bodied, full-bore old style - or used to be!

Re: So what wines are on the Xmas menu this year?

which rather keeps the discussion open as to how the Primo Joseph fizz ages :) I'd still say you'd want to consume within 10 years or so IMHO. I've a few more vintages coming down the line so will comment further moving forward. I still think it's great off the bat and with a few years to settle in...

Re: So what wines are on the Xmas menu this year?

Primo Estate Joseph 2001 disgorgement - the best bottle so far out of 9 I have cellared for the past 20+ years. Whilst the others have had a tawny port taste to the fore, this had the fruit to keep the older material at bay and was a delicious drink. Just 3 more left out of the original 9, and I'll ...

Re: So what wines are on the Xmas menu this year?

I'd suggest that Joseph is not a candidate for extended ageing, as the aged character and complexity is built into it from the get-go. I've started tucking into a six pack that I have professionally cellared for 20+ years, and although the bottles are in perfect condition, the dosage really does ten...

Re: Henschke Bottle Quality... thoughts?

Yeah - I think it happened on the Japan end, surprisingly. The bottle was in the centre of the case which had cardboard stuffed in about half of the empty slots - a last minute repack in BNE airport before check in. I opened the box expecting worse, and TBH was relieved to find it was just the one.....

Re: Henschke Bottle Quality... thoughts?

Styrofoam wine shippers inside the cardboard boxes have worked well for me, although if you ship locally from the airport in Japan you need to repack them into a normal cardboard box provided by the carrier - go figure. Just got back to Japan and had one bottle broken - 1972 Wynns Black Label. The G...

Re: Old Australians From Climate Controlled Storage.

Just back from Australia and an accompanying cellar raid - was very pleased with the condition of all of the bottles cellared professionally since purchase 20+ years ago. All labels pristine and fills into the neck on wines back to the 90s. Only one oxidized wine - a 98 Tahbilk Marsanne - but its tw...

Re: Old Australians From Climate Controlled Storage.

Gavin, I have a bunch in the cellar from the 90s, and with that sort of age I can't say I've found the acidity prominent or disjointed, as one might expect. Likewise with a 2001 Dead Arm I enjoyed recently. However a recent 2018 or so Old Vine/Footbolt sampled had acidity that rendered it almost und...

Diamond Valley Reserve Pinot Noir 07 - Got 15 yrs on it now. Garnet red colour. Earth, leather and undergrowth. Not much primary fruit, some red fruits perhaps. Soft, subtle tannin on the palate and long. Oh Diamond Valley... haven't seen them in ages. I used to like their blue label chardonnay ......
