Sunday is here again....

Last night I opened a Grant Burge 1998 Meshach which had been given to me as a gift years ago.

Here is the TN I made at the winery on release. "Grant Burge 1998 Meshach SAMay2002 is undoubtedly a very good wine. It has a complex nose showing sweet plums, black cherry, liquorice savoury plums, spice coconut and vanilla. An excellent balance is provided by the dusty tannins, well judged acid and deep, distinct, concentrated fruit. The palate follows the nose and flows from sweet to savoury flavours. However there is an underlying sweetness that stays on the palate throughout. This is a rich full-bodied wine with a layered structure and harmonious complexity and will be long lived. Rated as Excellent with ** for value."

Well, little has changed but it certainly hasn't improved. The wine I tried last night have loads of fruit sweetness but 5/8th of sweet Fanny Adams in the way of complexity. It was sweet, one dimensional and boring.

Although I said it was a "good wine" at the time, I didn't think much of it and my impression hasn't changed. I would now rate it as Recommended with * for vale.

Now what have you guys been drinking over the last week?
Cheers
Ric

96 Turkey Flat Shiraz. Interesting wine full of brandied cherry, ginger loaf, xmas cake flavours. Drinking well now. not a mindblowing experience but not bad for a wine that cost me little over $20 from the cellar door a decade ago.

04 Penfolds 389. I really like this wine, perhaps my favourite since the 96. Although the 05 is good I just like the reserved 'foot off the gas' style that this wine brings. Lovely tannin structure and super balance between all components. At $25 outlay its even tastier

Elderton Shiraz 05 - colour - mid red - palate dull and uninteresting - very disappointed - expected it to be full of fruit flavours and a deep purple red colour - maybe a bad bottle.

Penfolds 02 Bin 389 - notes already posted

Warrabilla Reserve Shiraz 07 - not a bad wine given the vintage - but to my palate seems like a earlier drinker - drinking superbly after a hours decanting with no room for improvement

Warrabilla Reserve Durif 07 - not sure what to make of this bit closed and dormant - even after a few hours decanting - nice colour - think the durif has been a little off since the 05 vintage

cheers

1993 Henschke Eden Valley Riesling 125th anniversary : rich , weighty and intense aged Eden Valley Riesling. Excellent besides the pain in the ass snapped in half then crumbly cork. I think my trusty Screwpull is a bit too harsh on older corks - might have to try and get on of those Ah-So thingies ?

1993 Peter Lehmann Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon : deja vu again with a snapped then crumbly cork ! Nonetheless after " straining " this was a very pleasing dry Red. More regional than varietal but being Barossan that's no shame. Also not too over oaked - one of those examples of the more modest wines from the over oaking era being a better drink now than the more expensive wines that were chock a block with wood.

Wendouree cabernet sauvignon 1994 - gave it about 5 hours decanting time and watched her evolve beautifully over the next 3 hours. Lots of ripe berry, beautifully balanced between tannins and fruit - probably could live another 10 years easily but a delight.

Mt Avoca Reserve Semillon 1998 - a wine that could convert any chardy drinker into believing there is a heaven on earth. A glorious accompaniment with the king prawns wrapped in prosciutto.

Wine Society Cellar Selection McLaren Vale Shiraz 1998 - a wine that tasted more like a Coonawarra cabernet from a more recent vintage than a 10 year old shiraz - lovely, balanced, minty and very easy to drink.

Clarence Hill Shiraz 1999 - a wine purchased on ebay about 5 years ago for nothing but is drinking beautifully in its window now.

Bimbagen Myall Road Botrytis Semillon 2002 - tasty little sticky to have with the coffee and dessert. Most of the women thought this was the wotn.

La Testa Blend 2003 - big powerhouse of a wine at 15% but quite elegant as the night wore on......

Just cursory notes, lots of stuff...

Besides the underperforming Penfolds pair of 02s (389 and Kalimna), I had:

Dowie Doole Shiraz 2004 - nice surprise and sealed under Diam. Rich McLaren Vale flavours, quite tannic but fruit seemed to flourish with time.

Mr Riggs Shiraz 2006 - very drinkable, sweet core of fruit, nice length

Woodstock Five Feet 1998 - quite fresh and drinking well although not a great deal to rave about.

Trip down to Olivers Taranga today for lunch

OT Tempranillo 2006 - lacking upfront fruit and a bit thin on the palate, quite a nice food wine although there are better TMPs about

OT Grenache 2006 - pleasant, a touch coarse

OT Shiraz 2005 - good example of McLaren Vale shiraz, honest and balanced.

OT HJ Reserve Shiraz 2004 - classier but not necessarily better? Had a nuance of Bourbon to me, the oak probably although aged under French Oak evidently. A good wine but not as true to the region as the base model, in my opinion. Will age, I'm sure.

Next a trip to Samuels Gorge, all the wines of which are impressive, benchmark sort of stuff in a way.

Samuels Gorge 07 Tempranillo - much better, pongy but pleasant nose, grippy and rich

Samuels Gorge 06 Grenache - superb Grenache, one of the best I've had for long time, very concentrated and focussed and clean as a whistle. Big style but not overblown.

Samuels Gorge 06 Shiraz - again, big inky, savoury style and delicious. A chewful, but will improve.
Cheers

Pipers Brook Chardonnay 2002 - hmmm, 8 years old, should have known better, a bit broad & flat - but from long experience, I never toss them out straight away, & indeed on 2nd day (kept in a 375 ml) much better, somehow the acidity has come up, with honeyed & lanolin notes.

Holly's Garden Pagan Pinot 2006 - made by Neil Prentice of Moondarra - obviously very young, no staining on the cork at all. Cloudy, unfiltered, some grainy matter in the mouth (tartrate crystals, it turned out) rather prominent acidity, but with lovely juicy red fruits underlying it. Needs another year or 3 to show its best.

Lawsons Dry Hills Pinot 2003 - screwcap - loved the 2002 - this one's different, not much sophistication, but amply flavoured in a rustic way.

Stanley Brothers John Hancock Shiraz 1998 - immediate impression is very oaky with the fruit drying out - however, patience (following day) reveals its loveliness - everything seems to magically balance out, oak in the background, with an elegant & seductive palate.

Joseph Angel Gully Shiraz 2001 - snaffled at auction for under $20 - now this is different! - clearly developed with some funkiness, needing food - reminiscent of Italian reds - you'd swear there was something here along with the shiraz - sangiovese maybe, that gives it it's savoury tannic bite

Guigal Hermitage 1999 - opened after a number of big Oz shirazes, a mistake - restrained, edgy, earthy, almost vegetal character to it. Needing more time in the decanter & maybe more in the cellar. Will look at it again in a day or two.

I also picked up some of this said same wine for equally low price at auction and have since been surprised at the asking price for the 04. The 01 is a nice wine, certainly on the full side and none the worse for it.

2004 Hay Shed Hill Block 2 Cabernet Sauvignon (Margaret River)
Brought by a friend.
Luscious Margaret River Cabernet, nary a trace of Eucalypt, plentiful dark fruit, esp. cassis, some tobaco leaf, firm and powdery tannins, just an absolute treat, with beautiful balance, and plenty of potential. Great length too.

To me a lesser known brand, but ohhh what a nice surprise!
13.5% ABV Quality cork. Drink 2009 - 2020 95/100 Brilliant.

Hi all,

2005 Voyager Shiraz
- Dark purple in colour, the nose was deeply perfumed with violets, plums, berries, and a himt of menthol. The palate did not disappoint, with rich intense fruit flavours and savoury pepper, cinnamon and cloves. Good length and fine tannins, finishing with some acidity, which freshened up the palate. Could have sworn this wine had some viognier, but label states it is a straight shiraz. Very good indeed.

2001 Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz
- Hmmm, not very good at all. Not sure why I have 2 more of these. Will have to relegate this to the cooking wine stash.

1999 Pol Roger Rose
- I am a huge fan of the Pol Roger NV and vintage. Also, the 96 Winston Churchill blows my mind!!! However, the 99 Pol Roger Rose is absolute rubbish!!! Way too sweet in my view.

2004 Beaucastel Chateau Neuf du Pape
- WOWchamamma..... This was fantastic!

Cheers

Longhop Shiraz 06 - I liked this. Lots of pepper along with plummy fruit and some mint. Juicy, sweet fruit, nice oak and full bodied, very soft fine tannins. Lots of sediment in my bottle - I should have decanted.
Cheers,
Mike

rooview wrote:1996 Billecart-Salmon Blanc de Blanc
Deep, wonderful nose. Totally elegant and refined. Perfectly dry. A long lasting finish. This has years left. Excellent if you like them lean. Excellent+.

1996 Bollinger RD
The opposite of the Billecart BdB - broad, mushroomy and juicy. I would drink it now, further bottle age won't be helping this out. Again, excellent but I doubt many could love both this and the BdB above as the styles are at such polar opposites. Excellent+.

1999 Bollinger
On a different night, this is also really good. Still tight on the nose but generous in the mouth. I'd drink it now but I don't like my bubbles too old. Very good+.

NV Comte Audoin de Dampierre Rose
Apricot and cumquat nose. A little astringent on the finish. An interesting style that some would love. Certainly good and worth a try if you happen to find a bottle. Very good.

1997 Domaine Ramonet "Les Ruchottes" Chassagne-Montrachet
A wonderful spicy and herb-infused nose. Nice ripe, generous flavours with a trace of nuttiness. Drinking wonderfully now. Very good+.

2003 Leeuwin Estate 'Art Series' Chard
Now this is ripe, big and voluptous after the Ramonet! Also had recently at the Auswine offline from a bottle donated by a passing Mr Trott. Strangely it seems better colder than I'd usually drink whites. Too oaky and astringent for my taste - but perhaps time will be its saviour? Very good if it's your style.

1998 Domaine Leroy 'Clos de Vougeot'
This is what Burgundy is all about. A very deep, complex, seductive nose that constantly shifting and kept me busy for hours. Round, and generous (especially considering the vintage) with good complexity. But on swallowing little explosions of secondary, brooding flavours come to the fore in a really, long satisfying finish. Outstanding!

2004 Penfold's Magill Estate Shiraz
Exotic spice and a touch of motor oil. In the mouth very much like a cherry-filled chocolate truffle, plums and a touch of coffee. It's very young and has years to go but it's pleasing now if you're eating some slow cooked protein. Very good+.

2005 Clos des Papes
Very, very young. This is over the top, masses of fruit with noticable alcoholic heat and simple Grenache characters. A little white pepper and crushed pine. This has had rave reviews from Parker, Wine Spectator and Tanzer but perhaps I'm just a more traditional CdP kind of guy.

1999 Chateau d'Yquem
This is super! Rich, pure and concentrated. This stood up better than any Sauternes with a gently sweet dessert and some roquefort. Very young but wonderful drinking now. Outstanding.

2000 Royal Blue Tokaji 5 puttonyos
Thankfully on different night to the d'Yquem or it might not have stood a chance. This is a lovely wine with delicious apricot marmalade characters, masses of sugar and acidity to boot. Very good+.

2001 Kracher TBA #2 (Muskat Ottonel)
A dessert almost in itself. Unctious, and delicious peach notes. Drink up if you have any I can't guess this would be improving. Yum. Excellent.

gosh you have some amazing wines on hand!

Geeze, hard to compete with Gary and Adrian this week...Lucky boys.

05 Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz Decided to try a bottle of this due to talk of brett. No such problems here. Delicious full bodied red with plenty of time ahead of it. Very good drinking now but no rush.

05 Penfolds Bin 128 Fairly non descript but certainly enjoyable in its youth. Nicely weighted with good fruit.

08 Skillogalee rielsing Very distinct pear nose. Turned to more limes and lemon on the palate. A little thin in the body but more complexity was revealed as it warmed up.

00 Wolf Blass Gold label riesling Golden colour, quite creamy mouthfeel with lanolin and wax then lemon and honey as it opened in the glass. Quite enjoyable.
Cheers,
Kris

Yeah, nice TNs GW, have to wonder why you and a number of others others slum it, even bother with bread and dripping Australian wines.

By all means post the notes you recorded at this extravaganza of almost entirely offshore wines. Yawn.............

As I said, I'll get to writing some notes in a while - It's not like I'm not known for writing plenty of notes. Also I don't really know why you have to be quite so vitriolic about this sort of thing - you may not care for the wines, or it makes you feel inferior or whatever it is that irks you specifically, but a fair few people may be interested and if there is a specific wine there I can knock out a quick TN on request. This is a wine forum for sharing experiences - whatever they may be. I for one always enjoy reading about Halliday's grand tastings (for example) even if others don't..and that is what this is..a grand tasting that happens once or twice a year for me. If you don't think I love Australian wine, buy it and drink it daily then why the hell do you think I spend hours each and every day tasting and writing about them! You wouldnt find a more passionate supporter of the local industry....

PS. Bread and dripping (with salt) is actually one of my favourite foods..
PPS. It is also important to drink the best wines in the world (from other countries) to understand the local ones better.

I forgot the pepper. The other one that most (good) Doctors recommend is white bread fried in bacon fat. Magnificent...like a good Mersault :)

TN: Craiglee Shiraz 2000

After opening the bottle there was a slight whiff of musty earth. Poured straight into a quality glass and allowed to sit for about 15 minutes before trying. Initial impressions were a perfectly proportioned wine that oozed of quality cool climate shiraz. Fired up the webber and placed a large slab of lightly marinated rib eye and cooked it to a nice medium rare state. During this cooking process, I kept returning to the Craiglee and it just kept getting better and better. This wine was starting to sing after about an hour in the open bottle. Beautiful fruit, fine tannins, long finish and has the structure to last at least another 5-7 years before flatlining.
A perfect companion to some good steak and hot english mustard. 96/100

Nice one Gary ! Owning and/or having consumed many of these wines, I'm looking forward to the TNs (especially the 3 most recent Krugs in one sitting).

Dr Loosen Urzig Wurzgarten Spatlese 2006
Vidal Reserve Chardonnay 2002
Penfolds Bin 389 1996
Seppelt Great Western Syrah 1996
Church Road Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 1998
Coldstream Hills Reserve Pinot Noir 2000

Highlights were the Dr Loosen, Vidals (which showed the overt HB stone fruit I normally associate with Stonecroft), & the Great Western (consensus view was that it outperformed the Bin 389 on the night). Coldstream Hills was somewhat disappointing -- tasted a little oxidised & tired.

Cheers
Peter
