The recent topic regarding prices on a wine list got me thinking. What is the best buy you've had at a restuarant? We all know that mark-ups can be ridiculous but have you ever come across a real bargain, what was it and how much?
Had a Dead Arm Shiraz on the long weekend at a restuarant in Bungendore (a smallish town in south-eastern NSW), was $75 and I thought reasonable value, given it was the pick of the wine list for quality and price compared to normal retail (something I can't help but compare when buying from a wine list). Was nice too, wish I had ordered it earlier than I did though, to allow a better decant than it got - some serious swirling happened...
Matt.

Ottoman in Canberra currently has the 1997 Seppelt Great Western Shiraz for $60
I was tempted to ask for a 6 pack to take home
What is particularly odd about this is the 1998 St Peter's is $180
A couple of years ago the restaurant in Murrumbateman had the Clonakilla Shiraz Viogner a dollar cheaper than cellardoor

I was at a restaurant at King Street Warf (Sydney) last night and had a bottle of 2005 Tyrrell's Vat 47 for $49.
It was a real stand out on the wine list. I only looked at the whites, as we were having seafood, and most of the others were wines that are less then $20 retail and were on the list for around the $45 dollar mark.
Very nice wine too. Went will with the grilled seafood platter.

I love cooking with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food.
