Adelaide Offline 30th November Bookings

Okay guys, it's been well over a month since the last one so it's time for another offline.

With the rumoured demise of T-Chow, offline regulars David & Pam have recommended Cafe Kowloon at 116a Gouger Street, and I have made a tentative booking for 10-15 people there for 7pm Friday the 30th.

I'm guessing it's the usual deal: ridiculously cheap Chinese cuisine, BYO glasses and $1.50/bottle corkage, and we'll wing-it in regard to the menu.

So who's interested in this one?

Just have a look back at the various offline reports and that should give you a pretty good indication. Don't think we've ever had a first growth, but you could use this opportunity to break the duck

I'm in, but leaving early (leaving at 6am next day for a fishing/camping trip!) I almost said no but these things are hard to resist. Perhaps we could aim for more structure and less bottles? (Even as I write that I'm thinking of what sticky to take as a second bottle!)

This sounds good and there is a gap in the calendar for the 30/11, which means I can get there. Re wine theme I'm happy to fit in with anything organised. Overall I would prefer fewer top wines than lots of medium level bottles. Initial ideas include a Bannockburn 2004 pinot that I haven't tassted and maybe an older Clare Reisling. Or maybe chipping in with someone for a more expensive bottle

It's good to see a few more new faces at these events, so welcome aboard Gustav & Sarah!

At this stage it may be a bit early to speculate a theme & what people are taking - the number of people going and the possibility of the weather turning stinking hot could be a factor. I missed all the Pinot/Duck nights a couple of years ago so that might be an idea, but for the next week or so I'm mainly interested finding out who's in and we can discuss the rest closer to the day.

I just got a mail that Lagare Lout may be able to make this one, although his lovely partner Bec won't because of work committments.

So at the moment the count is 8-11 people. So are there any other newbies or usual suspects out there up for this offline - Gavin, Shadrach, markg, John#11, Jordan, 707, MartinJC, RRose, Wayno, DavidL, etc?

Sorry to hear you can't make it Wayno & Jordan. Depending on how things go I may try and arrange another offline on a weeknight in late December (probably at Soho) so keep your eyes open for that one if it materializes.

I'm hoping by the end of this week we'll finalize who's going, and then we can work out what we're all taking and whether there should be some sort of theme this time.

It's time to also talk about what we might be taking - at the moment I'm looking at probably the 2006 Ngeringa Chardonnay and a 1994 Mitchell Sevenhill Cabernet Sauvignon, although I'm also thinking an aged Burgundy/Pinot could be switched for the Cabernet, or maybe a 1995 Tintara Reserve magnum if we've got 10 or more going.

I've now updated the list including what we're taking. I've got no problem with you taking the two Chardonnays Mark, I'll change my white to a 2007 Leabrook Estate Gewurztraminer. It looks like there's definitely 10 or more, so I'll take a magnum of either a 1995 Tintara Reserve Shiraz, or 1992 Mitchell Sevenhill Cabernet Sauvignon.

I'll be equipped with a bottle of 1999 (or 94, but I have a feeling I've taken one before and it was a bit over the hill) Vat 1 and something red, with bubbles... not sure what it'll be yet, though.

I've just rung up and confirmed again for Friday - at this stage I said we definitely have eleven with another possible two, maybe three.

I hope some others are going to be taking notes because I've just had my butt kicked by a bug the last three days, and while I'm on the mend and confident I'll show I'm not sure how decent my notes will be this time.

Looks like it's going to be pretty warm and humid so it may pay to chill those whites well in advance, and remember guys BYO glasses and if possible check for any corked wines before you leave.

Probably won't hurt chilling down some of those reds slightly too. Especially the 2002 RBJ Theologicum which comes in at bruising 16.5%
