Godolphin and Montrose

Not your usual Tuesday night fare, rather a last drinks before we shoot over to Europe for a few weeks. Paired with roast beef, potatoes au gratin and broccolini. An earylish night of dense and powerful flavours!
Glaetzer Godolphin 2005
Opened and first poured with a whiff of odd hessiany stink (or could have been the old glass smell of Riedels unused for awhile). After a mandatory wash up, tried again. Beautiful cedary fruit sweet nose with vanilla ice cream and berries obvious. Lovely palate with a clenched fist of fruit sweetness that kicks on into a well composed palate, lots of length and a rich finish. Tannins not particularly obvious, just drinking so easily now. This again did not disappoint me - delicious, composed and balanced wine which will probably improve and develop some savoury complexity but as it is, it's a pure expression of Barossa fruit in the upfront sense.
Montrose Black Shiraz 2002
A nose dominated by plum and savoury notes including black pepper. Quite grippy, furry tannins and heaving with clanking structure, I thought the palate died a bit too early but there was plenty of upfront flavour through to the mid palate. A well composed wine again, but without the pure charisma of the Godolphin.[/b]
