Godolphin and Montrose

Post by Wayno »

Not your usual Tuesday night fare, rather a last drinks before we shoot over to Europe for a few weeks. Paired with roast beef, potatoes au gratin and broccolini. An earylish night of dense and powerful flavours!

Glaetzer Godolphin 2005
Opened and first poured with a whiff of odd hessiany stink (or could have been the old glass smell of Riedels unused for awhile). After a mandatory wash up, tried again. Beautiful cedary fruit sweet nose with vanilla ice cream and berries obvious. Lovely palate with a clenched fist of fruit sweetness that kicks on into a well composed palate, lots of length and a rich finish. Tannins not particularly obvious, just drinking so easily now. This again did not disappoint me - delicious, composed and balanced wine which will probably improve and develop some savoury complexity but as it is, it's a pure expression of Barossa fruit in the upfront sense.

Montrose Black Shiraz 2002
A nose dominated by plum and savoury notes including black pepper. Quite grippy, furry tannins and heaving with clanking structure, I thought the palate died a bit too early but there was plenty of upfront flavour through to the mid palate. A well composed wine again, but without the pure charisma of the Godolphin.[/b]
Cheers

Nice notes.

Following this theme, the release of the new 2006 Amon Ra etc is upon us all.

This is a good time to let people know the Godolphin, while still being made, has had a name change.

There will no longer be a Godolphin, although the wine will be identical.

The new name will be

Glaetzer ANAPERENNA

Same wine, same combination (Shiraz and Cabernet), simply a name change.

Back to your regular programming.

Gavin, is that a wind-up?

Gavin,
Is that a wind-up? - or have the Al-Makhtoums nobbled Glaetzer with a copyright suit on the name Godolphin?!

Well, without knowing 'from the horse's mouth' so as to speak

I believe this may be the case.

Mind you, the Glaetzers have not personally confirmed this with me, so it may not be true, there may be another reason.

The name change is correct though, I will get to try these new wines in a week or so, looking forward to it.
