TN: 1995 Mount Mary Quintet

Post by Gasman »

Opened a bottle last night to complement some nice T-bones we'd bought.

Not considered a great vintage, and wasn't super impressed when I opened a bottle five years ago, but this was singing last night.

Bright clear ruby with no signs of bricking. Decanted for about an hour. Initially a bit tight on the nose, it gradually opened to reveal wonderful aromatics - sweet red berries and violets predominantly. No hint of greeness, and perfectly integrated oak (though oak is never a predominant feature in quintet). The palate was intense, and exceptionally balanced with good acidity and great length. Medium body, fine tannins (though not quite fully resolved yet), and a great match with the steaks.

Starting to hit it's straps, with plenty of potential for further ageing.

95 was the first vintage I bought of Mount Mary and I've had most of the case I bought as I've waited for the subsequent vintages to mature. I may have dablled in the 97s too. Wish I had waited a little longer but I've still got a couple left. Not a bad vintage at all and the pinot is also very, very good. They are drinking very well with a decent decant.
Cheers,
Kris
