Domaine du Pegaü Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée 2003

Post by Lincoln »

A bit late for Gav's Grenache week, but certainly worthy of a mention. These guys (Pegau) show what can be done with Grenache. It is unlike anything you will see in Australia.

A blend of 80% Grenache, 9% Syrah, 6% Mourvedre and 5% miscellaneous varietals. For those that are interested, the other 10 allowable varietals in Chateauneuf du Pape are Cinsault, Clairette, Picardan, Picpoul, Roussanne, Bourboulenc, Muscardin, Vaccarèse, Terret and Counoise.

Medium red in colour. An extraordinary nose: roasted meats, kirsch, herbs, pepper, red cherries and blackberries - sweet and savoury at the same time. The palate is pure red fruits, sumptuous and voluptuous, seemless and slippery, meltingly soft tannins and tremendous length. Not a trace of brett here – it is as clean as a whistle, and speaking of whistles, toot toot, all aboard the Pegau train.

This is quite a contrast to the 2001 Cuvée Réservée which needs time; it is great straight off the bat.

$110 RRP, but should be < $100 from a friendly merchant. I know this is expensive, but honestly for a top shelf Grenache this is really worth 1 or 2 bottles on the cellar.

Unfortunately here in Winnipeg (Canada) we have the bad 2002 vintage. Only $70 Canadian. Has anyone had this vintage? It was very poor for the area so I have not picked up any. Thanks - Rick

You are wise - do not touch the 2002.

Short commercial message.

I have discovered I can get stock of this wine, at less than $100 pb.

If anyone is interested, please do let me know.

Sorry for the commecial interruption, back to your regular transmission.
