Brisbane Wine Club, the third.

Greeting to all you Brisbane-based winos.

Time to organise the third Brisbane Wine Club dinner. Craig was going to do it, but he's too caught up in buying a house or some other such triviality :)

Miro's has been mentioned as a possible venue, but since I don't like the place (based on one visit only, mind you), I have another suggestion. Details as follows:

Venue: Caravanserai (1 Dornoch Tce, West End). Turkish cuisine.
Theme: Bring something good (>= $30 rrp). Such a broad theme would, methinks, go well with the wide variety of food presented at a Caravanserai banquet.
Date: 26/5/06
Time: TBA

Cost will probably be around $45/pp for a 3 or 4 course banquet (involving a bunch of shared dishes), including corkage.

Glassware sucks (it does at Miro's, too), so I'd recommend to BYO.

Bubbles, reds, whites, and stickies are all welcome. Strictly one bottle + one backup per person. Backup should be kept hidden from the table unless needed. People brought more than this to the first dinner, and there was a great deal of (heartbreaking) wastage. I understand everyone's desire to show off and share as much good wine as possible, but rather than everyone bringing too much wine to each BWC meeting, I'd rather just have more meetings :-)

Meetings will happen strictly on the 4th Thursday or Friday of each month hereafter (I include Thursday, only because one of my favourite restaurants won't accomodate a party of our size on Friday or Saturday). It's important to maintain regularity so that people can plan accordingly. I apologise for letting this slide.

Let us all know what you think, if you're coming, and what you're bringing.

Stuart

Looks like we (James and Niki) will finally be able to attend! Yippee!

In other good new, I'm moving my cellar up from Sydney so I'll be able to fish out a couple of nice bottles!

Cheers
Elvis

P.S The sooner we lock in the date the better.

OK, so the cast list is as follows:

James and Niki
Myself
Criag
Brett and Patricia
Corey and Nia (maybe)
Peter K.

Looks like a small one, which is fine by me. I wasn't even able to properly meet everyone at the first dinner.

I'll book the restaurant for 7:30. I'll let you know of this changes.

I'll bring a Primo Estate Joseph Sparkling Red to start the evening.

Anyone going to bring a dessert wine?

Stuart

p.s. Caravanserai do sometimes have belly dancing :-)

Niki and I are thinking of bringing a 1998 Lindemans Pyrus and a 1998 Wynns Michael Shiraz.

This is terribly embarrassing, but I'm not able to make tonight's dinner. My wife will be induced into labour this morning, and by tonight I will be a new dad :-)

I might be able to make the trailing courses if I get kicked out after visiting hours, however. If I can, will bring along a dessert wine.

The reservation's under Clarke.

Wish you all a wonderful evening.

Good luck Stuart, I'm sure it will all go well :P

Don't waste your time coming to a wine dinner at this momentous time, either spend it with the family or catch up on sleep - you'll need it !

Cheers, Mark

A great night at Caravanserai was enjoyed by a modest line up. James (elvispga), Niki, Brett (redstuff), Patricia and Mark (Rudy).

Firstly, the food was fantastic. Arguably the best Turkish food I have had. We went with the $42 per head banquet and we got to try a full range of dishes. Highly recommended (for groups of 4 or more).

The wine; (Everyone had done their homework and had decanted their bottles before arriving at the restaurant. Excellent work!)

1998 Lindemans Pyrus

Drinking beautifully now and seemed to go well with the flavours of the meal.

1998 Orland Lawsons Shiraz

Brett mentioned up front about the mint on the nose and he was spot on. It didn't transfer to the palet but it was amazing just sniffing the wine.

1991 Best O Bin Shiraz

Another fantastic wine. Difficult to see as the light was all mood setting etc, however it drank like younger wine. Beautifully balanced.

1996 Wynns Michael Shiraz

Gorgeous stuff. Seemed like it had just entered it's drinking window and it was superb. A tough decision but my WOTN.

1998 Wynns Michael Shiraz

MASSIVE wine and still very primary. Seemed like it had it all there just needs at least 3-4 years to settle and calm down. This is going to be an amazing drink in another 5-10 years.

Sorry for the vague notes and impressions.

Great to meet everyone. Thanks to our acting Taxi supervisor Mark for securing our taxi  .

Cheers
Elvis

P.S Taking your own wine glasses is highly recommended.

Sorry I could not be there - I had to fly north on business at the last minute and then got back in time but injured my neck with luggage - I will have to make the next one.

Cheers

Yes, a rather nice evening - good food, lovely wine and enjoyable company !

1998 Orlando Lawsons Shiraz Damn minty on the nose - quite perplexing really. I believe from Padthaway - is this typical of the region ? Most enjoyable wine all the same.

1991 Bests Bin 0 Shiraz Perhaps a little tired and on the way down, but a wine still with some deep fruits poking through the smooth tannins.

1996 Wynns Michael Shiraz Agree on WOTN, quite a bit more evolved than the '98.

1998 Wynns Michael Shiraz Years ahead with good structure, perhaps currently in a disjointed phase ?

Stuart, hope all went well !

Regards, Mark

Sounds like a great night Elvis. Shame I couldn't make it. Like Craig, it will have to be the next one. Pity not to try my namesakes from such good vintages (96 and 98).

Any news on the baby front Stuart?

Brents looks good. Count me in. Any suggestions for a date so we can check diaries?

Any suggestions for a theme? A region? A varietal or two? A particular vintage? A style? "World Wines" to go with the World Cup  .

Perhaps it's time for a new thread.

How about McLaren Vale Shiraz? It is from the world

German wine for the world cup - some gewurz and riesling (+ a couple of shiraz :) )
