Perrin Reserve CdR 2003

Post by cranky »

Cotes du Rhone from Perrin et Fils of Chateau Beaucastel fame. Close to their entry level wine. I do have one bottle of Beaucastel 2000, but I have no intention of opening that any time soon.
Approx 60% grenache, 20% each mourvedre and syrah, but it does have some cinsault too. Twentysomething dollars, 13%, cork.

Not much on the nose - a big swirl gives alcohol, then a bit of meat, black pepper, and tobacco.

Medium bodied, fairly savoury, a bit of redskin lolly, dark cherry, dried herbs, initially long drying tannins. It softens with some air, but the tannin can still build up if swigged too quickly.
Went really well with roast beef.

Recommended with food, but Miss Harry or Medley would be more enjoyable if for no-food drinking

I did try a glass of another vintage of this a while ago at a restaraunt, where it was overpoweringly liqorice by itself, hard to swallow, but tremendously drinkable with the meal. Definitely a food wine.
