Just a quick update on a few wines.
1990 Eileen Haryd Shiraz
Cork had leaked right to the top and a lot of mould on the top as well, I thought I was in for an affected bottle.
What a massive bottle stink, I almost poured it down the sink after 30 mins when it hadn't come good, but I just thought it was still ok. Anyway,
after 2 hrs this wine was just, and I repeat just passable. A fair bit of mint and pepper on the nose, nothing else and the flavour was lacking in any complexity. Blah!....... so I left it for 2 days as I had to attend the semis at the tennis on Thursday ( GO BAGDATHIS...!!! ) and had the last half of the bottle tonight after it was sitting in the decanter for 48hrs. WOW....
what a transformation. Silky smooth texture that coated the tongue with a plethora of big red fruits. A beautiful bouquet of strawberries and dark grapes, just a pleasure to smell. Couldn't believe it was the same wine. Palate was tight and tannins had fully integrated to provide a head shaking good taste. What started out as an exhibition event turned into pandemonium. Ahh... and still two bottles left. Given the massive improvement over the 2 days in the decanter, one would be pressed not to see further improvement in this wine, but I doubt I will let the other 2 last for more than 1 year. 93 pts
1996 HP Riesling
Terrible nose, infact lacked any nose other than metal and kero, I thought it was corked, but eventually the fruit came through on the nose.
For a so called quality riesling, this lacked any finesse or elegance. A very short upfront palate of apples that did not last. A forgettable bottle. 88 pts
2000 Sally's Paddock
For $42 this was a great wine. A classic cool climate cabernet blend. Smooth, luscious and a pleasure to drink. Displayed all of the sweet dark berries and plum flavours. I bought another case after this tasting. Suprisingly it reminded me of Moss Wood. [/b]91 pts

At every turn, it pays to challenge orthodox ways of thinking

88 points on this description !? Halliday's point inflation strikes again ...

With due respect to Gianna and JH, perhaps they both only utilise the top twenty points of the 100 point scoring system. Thus a score of 88 for the awful HP Riesling may equate to something like 8 out of 20.
The words are the important part for me.
Cheers,
