good wine rack option

Post by manning »

Found this today and felt it was worth sharing.

I can't use any wood in my cellar due to termite and white ant risks. So I was delighted to find an Australian company who have designed an ABS plastic full-bottle wine rack, that is both extremely sturdy, has full bottle length and looks decent.

I got to see and hold a sample today and was very impressed. Modular racks have an RRP of $39.95 for a 16 bottle unit.

(Sheesh - I sound like the home shopping channel. But hey, I was impressed.)

If you don't want them as a display item in the house, but tucked away in the cellar, you can make up a rack to hold 18doz out of gal rio mesh for about $60. A bit of wood working (treated pine will stop the ants) or welding and hey presto loads of storage. Make sure you brace them well though.

Manning,

Thanks for the tip. Not sure how much room you have in your cellar but I just bought some metal racking for mine. Holds 216 bottles per rack at a cost of $295 plus GST. Looks professional and comes with all the necessary attachments so that they can be fixed to the wall, etc. Works out a little cheaper than the plastic option, but then you have to have the room to put a rack of this size in your cellar.

Purchased from Lifetime Industries.

Sorry that was me.

The above link doesn't appear to work. Try this one.

AJ - Got plenty of room under the house but its all on a 15° slope.

Consequently have had to lay about 60 bags of 20kg concrete to create a series of 30cm wide steps just to get this far. Modular stuff is thus very appealling.

That thing looks nice though - if I ever get a house with a flat surface I'll get some.

I have a pile of powder to prove that treated pine won't always stop the termites. We live in bush near Dural and I swear our termites have tattoos.

Would you mind giving a bit more detail on your idea though - sounds intriguing.

100mm square gal mesh can be bought in a couple of different size sheets but 1800 X 1200 makes a neat 18doz rack. All I do is make up braces out of 15x2mm flat bar , the sheets should be welded approx 130mm apart I put 4 along the long sides 3 down the middle and 2 on each end. Make 6 of the brackets 200mm long with a 90deg bend on the end appox 20mm long. These longer brackets are used to space and fix to the wall. Attach these to the appropriate side depending on which way you are mounting the rack. They should make the rack sit 70mm from the wall. Drill a hole in the tab on the end and dyna bolts through these to the wall should secure things nicely. I put a lick of cold gal on the braces and mesh where the welding had burnt it off. For your case of sloped ground you could cut steps into the bottom of the rack. You will loose a bit of storage but it will fit in for you.

If you and Dory are coming out to the creek on the sunday drop in to garage 26 and I can draw a diagram for you.

Ciao

Hi Manning
Dont know your circumstances ie own/rent but if you have access to get a machine under the house to cut a platform, but you can termite proof under your slab and walls and away you go.

cheers peter
