Which vintage is the largest in your cellar?

Post by Andrew Jordan »

Was in the cellar on the weekend, and following on from Brian's Poll from last week, wondered which vintage was the most popular in my cellar. 90% of the wine in my cellar is Australian and I have only been buying wine seriously for about 7 years, so the below results show which Australian vintage takes up the most room in my cellar:

1996 or older - 6%
1997 - 2%
1998 - 17%
1999 - 13%
2000 - 8%
2001 - 12%
2002 - 25%
2003 - 13%
2004 - 4%

Clearly 2002 has been a popular year in my purchasing habits with a good vintage in SA, plus the addition of many new boutique wineries popping up all over the place (i.e. Kalleske, Schubert, Glaymond, etc). Although the 2004 vintage only makes up 4% of my collection right now, I think this will equal, or even better the 2002 purchases . I had better start saving!!

How does your cellar compared??

I haven't got proper records but off the top of my head it's 98.

I'd say a rough guess would be:

Pre 96: 15% (I've still got a few 93 and 94 Penfolds and Henschkes)
1996 : 15%
1997 : 2% I avoided these like the plague
1998 : 30%
1999 : 15% ( I had spare cash in 2000 - 2002 so I bought a few 98 and 99's - the 99's are mainly Coonawarra and Victorian)
2000 : 2%
2001 : 5%
2002 : 13% (I'll probably try and get a few more of these)
2003/2004 : 3% (will obviously increase)

My current stocks are as follows (with a few pre-90 as well) a few more 2002's yet to buy no doubt, being quite wary of 2003, although as ever, the gems are there to be found.

Vintage - PC (Now)
nv - 1.7%
2004 - 1.1%
2003 - 4.5%
2002 - 16.9%
2001 - 15.4%
2000 - 8.9%
1999 - 10.4%
1998 - 21.8%
1997 - 3.9%
1996 - 8.1%
1995 - 2.4%
1994 - 2.5%
1993 - 0.5%
1992 - 0.4%
1991 - 1.2%
1990 - 0.3%

Another perspective (had to write a new query in the trusty RB Cellar Master), percentages of all wine bought (since 1988) by vintage, not current stock as above:
Vintage - PC (Bought)
nv - 1.4%
2004 - 0.5%
2003 - 2.3%
2002 - 8.6%
2001 - 8.1%
2000 - 5.1%
1999 - 7.0%
1998 - 18.3%
1997 - 8.2%
1996 - 11.4%
1995 - 4.3%
1994 - 6.4%
1993 - 2.6%
1992 - 3.4%
1991 - 4.6%
1990 - 4.7%
1989 - 0.5%
1988 - 1.5%

2004 (10.74%)
2003 (34.90%)
2002 (25.50%)
2001 (16.78%)
2000 (5.37%)
1999 (0.67%)
1998 (1.34%)
1993 (0.67%)
1992 (0.67%)
1991 (0.67%)
1983 (0.67%)
1981 (0.67%)
N.V. (1.34%)

Only been collecting for a year now, so a heavy bias towards more recent vintages which I imagine will even out over time.

1996 and older 16.25%
1997 6.25%
1998 5%
1999 8.75%
2000 10%
2001 20%
2002 33.75%

Ah, the wonders of CellarTracker.

While I was at it, I looked at my breakdown by variety and was surprised to see my cellar is dominated by Shiraz... despite my constant claims as to not really liking the variety!!

97 and earlier 1.5%
98 - 12.25%
99 - 7.4%
00 - 9.3%
01 - 20%
02 - 24.1%
03 - 14.8%
04 - 7%

More importantly is:

Cabernet & cab blends 30.1%
Shiraz & shiraz blends 56%
Other red varieties 10.2%

This means I only have 3.7% whites which are mainly Riesling and Semillon. I did discover 1 chardonnay which someone must have left here.

A bit over-weight on whites then? :?:

You need to get it down below 1% to be a real red bigot.

Yep! and 99% of that 1% has to be Frog Bubbles or stickies. :P :D

Brian,

It is frightening to see how close the percentages are between our two cellars. It looks like all those split purchases really do influnce the stock count.

Plenty of people seem to have a big stash of 02's in the cellar. My cellar is still small and i'm looking to add more. Anyone reccommend any 02's in the $30-50 range that are still available that may be worth a look ????

33% of my wines are 2002.

A few of my 2002 faves:

Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet/Shiraz - $35
Petaluma Adelaide Hills Shiraz Viognier - $40
Charles Melton Shiraz - $40
Charles Melton Nine Popes - $40
Wirra Wirra RSW - $45
Seppelts St. Peters - $50
Premierships and great wine... that is what life is all about

1998 but the 2002 Clare Rieslings nearly pipped the 1998s.

Without counting to the bottle it would be close between 98 and 02 though I voted 98 simply due to more of them being top notch compared to a wide level of 02s.

Dear Guest

Perhaps look into the meaning of the words "I prefered"

When you really get to the bottom of that definition you will realise that the author alone is the most qualified person to complete this sentance by the very virtue of its purpose.

However as I have said before, at least I have the guts to put my name next to my opinion.

I suggest you either missed out on most 98s and therefore justifying your losses or have tried some average wines and are using those as your rating for the vintage? Which 98s didnt you like and why? It seems to me month after month you are trying to make the same point again and again. Are you trying to convince everyone else or yourself?

Interesting results. Looks like it is a close race between 1998 and 2002 for the most popular vintage in Auswine Forum members cellars. Hopefully these 2 vintages will age wonderfully and we will have plenty of gems in the cellar in 2 - 6 years time. :D :D

Thanks for everybody's feedback and votes on the poll.

I share your view that 98 seems to be played down too much (I don't have enough experience with 96 to comment) - however taking anonymous pot shots at members does you no credit. I value Craig's input to this forum - I might value your opinion as well if you put your name to them. Please sign-up and post and I'm sure we'll have a pleasant discussion on the subject.
