1999 Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet

Felt like a red last night so wandered down to the cellar and noticed I'd hardly touched this. Only one gone from the dozen. Fred has been saying for years that this is rubbish from the 96 vintage so I wasn't expecting too much.

Opened up and I initially thought the cork a bit whiffy but a quick smell of the wine itself allayed those fears. In the glass still very dark red. No specific nose really. In the mouth, absolutely fantastic stuff. Full bodied - much more so than what I was expecting. Savoury nuances and a decent pepper finish. Would be perfect with a good traditional italian pizza. Very happy with this and absolutely delicious. At it's peak but will easily hold another two years.

Rewards of patience indeed - happy to still have ten more. For a $10 wine, this was very good buying.

Kris, I think your spot on with the food match. This wine is a little dusty and tastes a little like an italian job

Thanks Broughy and you're right, it is a bit dusty.

Gee slow day when the only posts are about jelly beans, a kiwi fruit "wine" and a Koonunga Hill!
Cheers,
Kris

Hi Kris,

Its a bastard when you have to spend all day working, especially when you normally knock off at lunchtime on Wednesday. Work is the curse of the drinking class.

I did make up for it tonight with a 96 Jacobs Creek Limited blend; bloody sensational, still very youthfull and years off its peak. A very under-rated wine.
Cheers

Hmmm, I never did buy any of that and meant to. Only ever heard good things about it. Oh well, can't buy everything I suppose.
Cheers,
Kris
