TN: 1990 Mount Mary Quintet

Post by markg »

At first it was quite tight but after decanting and breathing it blossomed into a wonderful elegant wine. The nose had wonderful savour aromas with a touch of gamey/meaty complexity. The palate was elegant with ultra fine, integrated tannins, intense, mouthfilling blackcurrant/coffee, superb length, wonderful depth and an oh so fine finish.

Another supurb wine pulled out from the cellars of Chris and Gary, thanks guys.
Cheers

Always wanted to try this wine. It was prohibitively expensive 10 years ago on the secondary market. Must be frighteningly so now!

Jamie, I reckon secondary prices on Mount Mary have fallen anything from 25-40% over the last several months. I just picked up a few bottles of '86 MM from auction. The previous owner of these absolute gems was expecting something in the $120-150 range. The indicative pricing suggested by the auctioneers was $80-115. I paid $82+.

And to think I bought a case of 1990 Mount Mary (all gone now :( ) direct from the winery for the outrageously high (well, it was then!) price of $26. Within a few years, I saw this selling on the secondary market for over $250 a bottle!

As David noted, the prices have fallen drastically over past 12 months. Mount Mary's that I sold for over $130 a year ago are struggling to hit $90 now. I remember sellng some 86 in 2004 for over $170 a bottle! Since I've got quite a bit left, must make note to self to ramp up my next TN!
