One of my customers is heading to Melbourne on business with a couple of free nights.
He has asked if perhaps I could recommend any winetasting establishments in the area?
Not my area of expertise, but I'd love suggestions from you.
He is a wine lover of course.
Thanks in anticpation.

Hi Gavin
There are plenty of great Melbourne establishments for your friend to indulge. Not sure if he is wanting restaurants or purely wine bars but the following would be my recommendations.
St Kilda
The Melbourne Wine Room - Fitzroy Street, St Kilda. Is in effect a converted pub and can get very busy, but the Melbourne Wine Room has a great vibe and is perfect for people watching. Most importantly though it has a brilliant wine list - and huge by the glass selection. For an out of towner, this is a top choice. You can eat really well here but I would prefer to wander up the street 50m to Cafe a Taglio for some of the best gourmet pizza in the country.
Circa, The Prince - Acland St, St Kilda (though just around the corner from Fitzroy St). If your friend is wanting the big dinner out - this restaurant is one of Melbourne's top handful. Most importantly it has a wine list to die for. Has won the Tucker Seabrook wine list award. (Much cheaper and more casual option to is to have a play in the Prince Wine Store downstairs, buy a bottle and go next door to the Malaysian Chinta Blues, then head up to the Melbourne Wine Room above).
City
Syracuse - Bank Place, City (off Collins St between Queen and William St). Converted out of an old bank, Syracuse has a really interesting wine list and always plenty by the glass. Often they have something particularly special open for the punters to try. You can eat here or just have drinks - the tapas/tastes are great. Have a beer beforehand outside at the Mitre Tavern next door.
Punch Lane - Little Bourke St, City. Has a bit of a Gentlemen's Club feel but in a good way. Book a table with the "red chairs". The food here is brilliant - both for tapas/tastes and mains. Can just go for the wine though - often a good mix of Victorian and overseas - again heaps by the glass.
Verge - Corner Spring St and Flinders Lane. A really interesting selection of hard to find wines inc. some brilliant NZ pinots. There is a bar downstairs and an excellent, well priced restaurant uptairs. decor is modern with a lot of concrete going on. Knowledgeable, unpretentious staff.
Supper Club - Spring St, City. If they've been for dinner in the city, go here afterwards. Easy to miss the entrance to the stairs leading up but just near the corner of Bourke. The ultimate way to end the night and a wine list and cigar selection that can make you stay until morning. Not cheap but an essential part of the big night out.
Institutions
Walters Wine Bar - Southgate. Get a table on the terrace for a wonderful view over the Yarra looking up at the City. Still a great list with plenty by the glass. Staff can be great or miserable and condescending. Food still good.
Langtons - Flinders Lane, City. Dark cellar restaurant / wine bar. A huge list, somewhat based on the Langtons auctions classifications. Really good food for the money at the "bistro" part of the wine bar, more expensive in the restaurant part. Often have interesting flights of tastings. One of the best sommelliers in town.
Jimmy Watson's - Lygon St, carlton. Has been around for ever but retains a fun atmosphere. Some interesting by the glass wines and Rutherglen muscats from the barrell.
You could find all these places written up with a Google search. Hope this helps.
Cheers
