• Actually it's more like over 300 years
• My broader region only has one recognised "Icon" wine, it's a sweet white with a long history
• My Wine Industry has it's own version of the Masters of Wine qualification

Ha ha. Except for the VERY obvious exception of the last characteristic, it could be somewhere in California!

But I reckon it's South America. Trouble is, I don't know any wine regions there...

Well done Graeme, I actually would have accepted the general Cape Winelands, or one of the major areas within; Constantia, Paarl, Stellenbosch.

to cover off a few points:

The South African winelands around Cape Town make great value wines, particularly if you go there to travel, the Exchange Rate to the SA Rand makes eating and drinking very cheap. This is to do with the economy over there more than the quality of the wine.

South Africa's leading varieties are Pinotage and Chenin Blanc but they are making great strides with the 'classic' varieties as mentioned.

The Icon wine I mentioned is Vin de Constance from Klein Constantia, it dates back hundreds of years, and was at one time acclaimed as the greatest sweet white in the world. It was also a favourite of Napoleon.

The Cape Winelands greatest climactic influences are the Southern Atlantic Ocean and the Cape mountain range, of which Table Mountain is a part, rising up behind.

The qualification is the Cape Wine Master, which was established during the apartheid days when South Africa was cut off from the maintsream wine world. It's now seen as a stepping stone to the MW qualification.
